SPE Student Chapter PETRONAS Hosts 2012 SPE President

On July 15, Ganesh Thakur, 2012 SPE President visited the Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS Chapter.

The visit covered four main areas:

  • Presentation by Ganesh Thakur on “How to Reach 70% recovery”
  • Luncheon and Networking Session
  • Tour around UTP
  • Session with SPE Student Chapters

The aim of the visit was:

  • To increase the technical knowledge of students on enhanced oil recovery.
  • To create awareness of the latest updates in the oil and gas industry.
  • To strengthen ties between the PETRONAS Chapter, SPE Kuala Lumpur, SPE International and other Chapters in Malaysia.
  • To promote the PETRONAS Chapter to the international level in the oil and gas industry.
  • To provide networking opportunities for faculty lecturers, staff, and students with industry professionals.
  • To exchange experiences to help improve the PETRONASCchapter.

The chapter looks forward to organizing similar events in the future to continually expose and educate Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS students to the latest challenges and opportunity in oil and gas industry in addition to strengthening bonds among SPE student chapters in Malaysia.

Distinguished Lecturer Evaluation Contest Winners Announced

The 2010-11 Distinguished Lecturer Evaluation Contest is now over, and the winners have been selected!  The prize is awarded to three sections, one from each division. The sections winning the USD 500 prize are:

  • Less than 150 members: Michigan
  • Between 151-500 members: North India
  • More than 500 members: Lagos Nigeria

Gus Archie Memorial Scholarship Winner Announced

Congratulations to Sharjeel Aziz! He has been awarded the 2011 Gus Archie Memorial Scholarship. His scholarship is renewable for up to four years.

Sharjeel graduated number 1 out of a total of 611 graduating students from James E. Taylor High School in Katy, Texas. He made a perfect score on the  math section of the SAT (a common university entrance exam used in the US).  He also scored perfectly on the mathematics level 2 section of the SAT subject exam.

His long list of outstanding achievements and leadership roles include (but not limited to):

  • Welch Summer Scholars Program at Texas Tech University
  • High School Aerospace Scholars (HAS) – NASA Internship
  • 1st Place in State – Future Business Leaders of America Business Calculations
  • 1st Place in Algebra and 2nd in Geometry – University of Houston Regional Math Contest
  • 1st Place in Calculator, Science (physics subsection), and Mathematics – University Interscholastic League (UIL)
  • Vice President – Mu Alpha Theta, Junior Engineering and Technological Society (J.E.T.S), Computer Science Club
  • President – Chess Club at his high school

When Sharjeel finds free time, he enjoys tennis, basketball, and reading. His immediate future plans include attending California Institute of Technology to pursue a degree in petroleum engineering. Congratulations again, Sharjeel!


Congratulations to SPE August Student Chapter of the Month – Middle East Technical University Cyprus!

The SPE August Student Chapter of the Month Middle East Technical University Cyprus (North Cyprus Campus) is staying busy while growing their membership.

The students of this chapter have been eagerly participating in and hosting petroleum engineering events.  They visited TPAO Akcakoca Natural Gas production facilities and three Offshore Production platforms, including GSP Bigfoot 3 that was doing drilling operation on Akcakoca shore.  They also visited the Research Laboratory of Turkish Petroleum Corporation. Some of the students attended the two day IPETGAS 2011 Chamber of Geophysical Engineers and UCTEA Chamber of Petroleum Engineers. They have also participated in the SPE Turkey Paper Contest. It is an objective of this chapter to learn and participate as much as possible with anything to do with petroleum engineering.

Students to Host Southeast Asia SPE Student Chapter Conference 2011

SPE-UTM (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia), SPE-UTP (Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS) and SPE-UCSI will be hosting the Southeast Asia SPE Student Chapter Conference 2011 (SASC’11) in November.

SASC’11 aims to provide a platform for students to:

  • exchange ideas and information relative to the Oil & Gas Industry
  • expose their potential
  • learn more about the technology within the industry.

Who should attend: All the Southeast Asia SPE Student Chapters’ representatives. Please note that there is a limit of up to THREE students and ONE lecturer for each Student Chapter.

Build the World Quarterly Winner Announced

Congratulations to the first quarter winner of the 2012 Build the World of SPE member recruitment contest, Mr. Hans-Uwe Brackel from the SPE German Section!

Build the World SPE member recruitment contest begins 1 January and ends 31 December each year. By sharing information about the value and benefits of SPE membership and recruiting friends and colleagues, members are rewarded with cash and valuable prizes. Quarterly prizes are drawn at the end of March, June, September and December.

SPE Student Chapter China University of Petroleum – Beijing (CUPB) Welcomes Alain Labastie, SPE President 2011

On April 20, Alain Labastie and Sheng Ding (SPE Section Chair, Northern China International) visited CUPB.

A presentation was given on “The Oil & Gas Industry: What’s next?”.  The speech was divided into four parts:

  • the trend in energy demand, where Alain suggested that with the rapid development in developing countries, the demand of petroleum would keep increasing with little influence from the stimulus of price.
  • reservation and protection of energy, where it was highlighted that the hydrocarbon would stay as an integral part of energy and would not cause a big energy crisis
  • the current situation and outlook of petroleum production: technical problems currently exist during the oil and gas extraction process, and this will continue to cause an imbalance between the production and demand of petroleum until 2020.
  • climate safety, where Alain gave a clear energy classification and proposed his own suggestion for future oil and gas extraction after talking about the green extraction in France.

After the speech, Alain answered questions on hot issues including Libya, graduate employment and the extraction of petroleum.

To conclude the visit Zhang Laibin, Headmaster of CUPB, expressed his warm welcome and congratulations to the achievement of SPE in recent years. He said that the visit from Alain Labastie and Sheng Ding was an important part of the internationalization strategy of CUPB.

The Chapter said “The visit of Alain Labastie is an encouragement to the research and communication work of our university in the field of petroleum and also a support to the work of our SPE student chapter. Our student chapter won the top 16 in the International Oil Knowledge Contest last year and was awarded Chapter of the Month for January 2011.  All these awards are enhancing the reputation of our university in global oil industry as well as increasing our international standards.”

SPE Chengdu Study Group Announces Subregional Student Paper Contest Winners

On April 25, Chengdu Study Group held the first sub-regional SPE Student Paper Contest in cooperation with Southwest Petroleum University (SWPU) and Chengdu University of Technology (CDUT).

A total 18 students took part: 12 from SWPU and 6 from CDUT.  Participants were split into three groups so there were individual competitions at BSc, MSc and PhD levels.

The competition gave students the opportunity to improve their English and presentation skills, showcase their research achievement, and compete against other students from Chengdu region for the opportunity to participate in the SPE Regional Student Paper Contest held at the 2011 Asia Pacific Oil & Gas Conference and Exhibition (APOGCE) in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The selection criteria were based on the performance of students during presentation. A scoring sheet, provided by SPE Asian Pacific, was used by each judge to evaluate each student’s performance.

The Judging Panel then announced the winners:
