SPE Student Chapter China University of Petroleum – Beijing (CUPB) Welcomes Alain Labastie, SPE President 2011

On April 20, Alain Labastie and Sheng Ding (SPE Section Chair, Northern China International) visited CUPB.

A presentation was given on “The Oil & Gas Industry: What’s next?”.  The speech was divided into four parts:

  • the trend in energy demand, where Alain suggested that with the rapid development in developing countries, the demand of petroleum would keep increasing with little influence from the stimulus of price.
  • reservation and protection of energy, where it was highlighted that the hydrocarbon would stay as an integral part of energy and would not cause a big energy crisis
  • the current situation and outlook of petroleum production: technical problems currently exist during the oil and gas extraction process, and this will continue to cause an imbalance between the production and demand of petroleum until 2020.
  • climate safety, where Alain gave a clear energy classification and proposed his own suggestion for future oil and gas extraction after talking about the green extraction in France.

After the speech, Alain answered questions on hot issues including Libya, graduate employment and the extraction of petroleum.

To conclude the visit Zhang Laibin, Headmaster of CUPB, expressed his warm welcome and congratulations to the achievement of SPE in recent years. He said that the visit from Alain Labastie and Sheng Ding was an important part of the internationalization strategy of CUPB.

The Chapter said “The visit of Alain Labastie is an encouragement to the research and communication work of our university in the field of petroleum and also a support to the work of our SPE student chapter. Our student chapter won the top 16 in the International Oil Knowledge Contest last year and was awarded Chapter of the Month for January 2011.  All these awards are enhancing the reputation of our university in global oil industry as well as increasing our international standards.”

SPE Chengdu Study Group Announces Subregional Student Paper Contest Winners

On April 25, Chengdu Study Group held the first sub-regional SPE Student Paper Contest in cooperation with Southwest Petroleum University (SWPU) and Chengdu University of Technology (CDUT).

A total 18 students took part: 12 from SWPU and 6 from CDUT.  Participants were split into three groups so there were individual competitions at BSc, MSc and PhD levels.

The competition gave students the opportunity to improve their English and presentation skills, showcase their research achievement, and compete against other students from Chengdu region for the opportunity to participate in the SPE Regional Student Paper Contest held at the 2011 Asia Pacific Oil & Gas Conference and Exhibition (APOGCE) in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The selection criteria were based on the performance of students during presentation. A scoring sheet, provided by SPE Asian Pacific, was used by each judge to evaluate each student’s performance.

The Judging Panel then announced the winners:

SPE Student Chapter CUPB Competes at Petrobowl

The China University of Petroleum – Beijing hosted the “New Field” Petrol Bowl on the March 26.  Many distinguished guests attended the competition.

Twenty competitors participated.  The competitors formed four teams via drawing lots.  The competition consisted of self introduction, required questions, elective and risky questions, which truly simulated the competition environment of “Petro Bowl”.  Through the event, which adopted the “knockout” system, the competitors showed their ability of English expression, professional knowledge and self charm.  The observing students learned a lot knowledge from the activity, and they were also impressed by the competitors’ outstanding performance.  The chapter is proud of using a new way providing an academic atmosphere for the students.

After two hours of fierce competition, the “Derrick” won the first prize.  Contestants will later be selected to represent the University and attend the 10th “Petro Bowl” at ATCE 2011.

SPE Student Chapter PETRONAS Visits Kencana

The PETRONAS Chapter organised a trip to the Kencana Fabrication Yard. The trip enabled students to have practical exposure in a fabrication yard that manufactures and assembles different parts of production facilities, process skids, drilling rigs and various kinds of platforms.

Students were given an overview of Kencana Petroleum operations undertaken at its fabrication yard.  The students were impressed by the company’s profile and projects that had been accomplished.  They found the completion of world’s tallest self-elevating, re-locatable wellhead platform (150m) project extremely interesting.

An informative tour was given around the Yard, which included the CPP (Central Processing Platform), Engineering Offices, Jackets and Piles yard, and the Construction yard.  Engineers leading the tour were happy to answer questions.  For most of the students, it was the first time they had observed these things, and they enjoyed relating their experience to theory learned in class.

Chapter selects contestants for the next Asia-Pacific paper contest

On the 5th and 6th of March, CUPB held their sixth SPE thesis competition.  Pr. Zhao Xionghu, the Dean of the Postgraduate Office, along with teachers from the Petroleum Engineering Department, were the judges.

Nine graduates and three undergraduates entered the semi-final, with eight participants going through to the final.  In the final, the contestants had to deliver an English speech about their thesis, and answer questions raised by the judges.  This gave them the chance to practice their English language and presenting skills.

Prizes were awarded as follows:

First place: Li Qiu and Sheng Mao

Second place: Ma Mingbo and Chen Hao Xu Xinchen

Third place: Cao Jie, Xie Quan and Yuan Jianbo

These students will have the chance to go to India to participate in the next SPE Asia-Pacific Regional Student Paper Contest.
