SPE Student Chapter MIT Competes in the ”Darcy Business Challenge”

The MIT Chapter hosted the finals of the “Darcy Business Challenge” sponsored by Shell P&T India Ltd. A total of 23 teams consisting of petroleum engineering students participated in the event. The contest exposed the participants to the real time challenges faced in the petroleum industry.

The contest itself was divided into three stages:

  • The contestants first studied and provided answers about the exploration phase consisting of log interpretation and reserves estimation of hydrocarbons.
  • This was followed by devising scenarios for development of the given oil-field using software like IPM-MBAL and IPM-PROSPER.
  • The final phase required implementation of an economic analysis and a feasibility report of the proposed scenario.

At the end of the three phases, the students had to present their solutions and justify their methods before a panel of reputed professionals, which led to some fierce competition.

The judges for this event were: Mr. Amit Singh, Reservoir Engineer, and Mr. Shawn Viegas, Production Technologist, both from the Shell Technology Centre, Bangalore.  The judges were impressed with the enthusiasm of the students, and how they presented and defended their solutions.
