Congratulations to SPE May Student Chapter of the Month – NED University of Engineering & Technology!

The NED student chapter of the month has been keeping busy engaging its current members and recruiting new ones. Here are some of their recently organized events:
Spring picnic 2011 was held at the Shamsi Farm House, with the students also organizing a fundraiser in which they sold T-shirts with the SPE Logo and NED University’s logo.

External Recruitment Drives were arranged with presentations that introduced SPE and describing how SPE interlinks both oil and gas industry personnel and students. The sessions have been a huge success with many, many attendees becoming new members on the spot. They also carried out the Active Members Recruitment Campaign, which was made available at the chapter’s website www.nedspe.com with online submissions.

A session was conducted recently by NED SPE Student Chapter regarding “Mind Sciences” to brief the students about fourth dimension personification. The lecture was delivered by Mr. Abeer-ul-Haq Usmani, who emphasized ways of expressing creativity and innovation.

The speaker Mr Moin Raza Khan with faculty and chapter officers.

“Energy Awareness Week” was held earlier in the year to make students aware about energy resources, conservation, role of fossil fuels in future and the environment.  The schedule included an opening by Dr. Sarosh Hashmat Lodi, Dean CEA (Civil Engineering & Architecture), NED University of Engineering & Technology and numerous presentations by professors and industry professionals. The crowd engaged in debates on topics  “Will Alternative Fuels Replace Fossil Fuels?” and “Is Global Warming a Myth?”.  The event was covered by leading newspapers and TV channels in Pakistan.

SPE Student Chapter MIT Competes in the ”Darcy Business Challenge”

The MIT Chapter hosted the finals of the “Darcy Business Challenge” sponsored by Shell P&T India Ltd. A total of 23 teams consisting of petroleum engineering students participated in the event. The contest exposed the participants to the real time challenges faced in the petroleum industry.

The contest itself was divided into three stages:

  • The contestants first studied and provided answers about the exploration phase consisting of log interpretation and reserves estimation of hydrocarbons.
  • This was followed by devising scenarios for development of the given oil-field using software like IPM-MBAL and IPM-PROSPER.
  • The final phase required implementation of an economic analysis and a feasibility report of the proposed scenario.

At the end of the three phases, the students had to present their solutions and justify their methods before a panel of reputed professionals, which led to some fierce competition.

The judges for this event were: Mr. Amit Singh, Reservoir Engineer, and Mr. Shawn Viegas, Production Technologist, both from the Shell Technology Centre, Bangalore.  The judges were impressed with the enthusiasm of the students, and how they presented and defended their solutions.

Congratulations April SPE Student Chapter of the Month – University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES)!

The student chapter at University of Petroleum & Energy Studies has proven that even the new chapters can quickly become quite successful.  The students of this chapter hosted Mr. Labastie (2011 SPE President) at a recent inaugural of UPES SPE Magazine Energy Era.  The event was also attended by Mr. Manav Kanwar (Secretary, SPE India Council) and Mr. Waleed Refaay (Managing Director, Middle East/India).  The chapter is accomplishing their goal of providing members an overall exposure with interaction, participation and competition with present and future professionals of the industry.

UPES hosted UPES Fest 2011, national level fest attended by company professionals from ONGC, Shell, Cairn, Reliance and Petrobangia.  The event was sponsored by ONGC, Shell, OBC and UPES.

This chapter has hosted visits from many industry professionals, including Mr. Sudhir Vasudeva, Dr. Tarun Chakraborti and Mr. Santanu, which strengthened the students’ bond with some of the prominent leaders in India.  Some student members attended SPE ATW held at Mumbai, as well as a Young Professional workshop at Bangalore.  The chapter launched Anubhav Mentorship Program and “Donate a Sunday,” a social service program.  They have organized “Safety Demonstration,” where chapter volunteers spread road safety awareness.  In an environmental awareness program, the chapter participated in “Tree Festival” along with around 1,200 younger students.

The chapter is rising above obstacles by using consistent effort and organized planning.  They have had great support from their university and faculty.  They planned orientation presentations for newcomers to the chapter and designed special activities for them.  They have become quite skilled at strengthening membership by using notices, posters, mass mailings and classroom publicity.  A great big hearty congratulations to the student members of University of Petroleum & Energy Studies SPE Student Chapter for winning SPE Student Chapter of the Month for April!  Keep up the extraordinary work!
