SPE offers opportunities for students and young professionals to learn about SPE’s benefits and engage with industry professionals. During the Artificial Lift conference in Colombia, young professionals were able to share the multiple benefits of joining SPE.
In addition, while attending the Congreso Mexicano del Petroleo in Cancun, Mexico in June, SPE along with student and professional members from the Mexican section, shared their positive SPE experiences. The same opportunities and shared experiences took place at the Brasil Offshore Conference last June in Macae, Brazil.
The SPE Regional Student Paper Contest South American & Caribbean was held during Brasil Offshore Exhibition & Conference in Macaé, Brazil. More than 20 abstracts were submitted to this contest during the conference. The undergraduate division contest was held at State University of Norte Fluminense on 10 June as well as the Master’s and PhD’s division on 11 June. The Chairman of this official SPE Student Paper contest was Guilherme Castro, Petrobras Integrity and Maintenance Manager and Chairman of Macaé Section. Castro said “The SPE Student Paper is a great tool to encourage and give students the experience on how to write and present SPE Technical papers.”
will take place during 2013 SPE ATCE in New Orleans —where all 10 regions will compete. The next SPE Regional Student Paper Contest South America & Caribbean is scheduled for 2014 LACPEC Maracaibo, Venezuela.
SPE with lots of local support from the SPE Bolivian Section implemented the “
Deep Gas and Condensate Exploitation – Best Practices and Technology Applications” workshop during March, in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia. More than 120 professionals attended. While there, knowledge and lessons were shared through the 24 presentations on gas and condensate reservoirs development including: deep wells, high temperature and high pressure wells, naturally fractured reservoirs, drilling, and exploitation challenges found in day–to-day practice.
In May, SPE and the SPE Ecuador Section joined efforts to organize the “
EOR: Technical and Managerial Framework for Ensuring a Successful Implementation” workshop in Manta, Ecuador. More than 130 experts from the Americas shared some of the most common challenges that confront the successful launch of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) projects such as: technical complexity, project cost, and time to reach commercial results. About 24 speakers enhanced the knowledge sharing. The event closed with a panel on: EOR Moving Forward – Expectations and Needs from the Technical, Managerial, Business, Regulatory, Academia, Environmental, and Human Resources side of our Industry with the participation of operators, regulators, services, and training companies.
Also in May, SPE with great support from its two sections in Colombia launched an Artificial Lift conference in Cartagena, Colombia entitled “Artificial Lift: Where Do We Go From Here.” This inaugural conference showcased new technologies as they combine all aspects of artificial lift systems, allowing more than 300 participants to see the full interactive circle of technologies, benefit from the more than 50 technical presentations and visit 17 company exhibits. Prior to the conference, a training course in
Progressing Cavity Pumping (PCP) and Rod Pumping Lift Solutions was offered to 20 attendees.

An agreement for mutual endorsement has been made between the ARPEL 2013 Oil and Natural Gas Conference in Latin America & the Caribbean, and the SPE 2013 Latin American and Caribbean Health, Safety, Social Responsibility, and Environment Conference.
The ARPEL 2013 Oil and Natural Gas Conference in Latin American & the Caribbean will be held 9–11 April 2013, in Punta Del Este, Uruguay, under the theme “Sustainable Transformation Through Responsible Leadership.” The conference promotes the exchange of ideas and proposals for solutions to consolidate responsible leadership for business management. Such interchange will be a key method to transform oil companies into energy companies that maximize the sector’s contribution to sustainable energy development within the region.
Incorporating interactive sessions, surveys, and workshops over 3 days, the event encourages active audience participation to cover a wide range of current topics in the industry, including energy security, geopolitics and global economy, regional cooperation, and key upstream, downstream and sustainability issues.
The SPE 2013 Latin American and Caribbean Health, Safety, Social Responsibility, and Environment Conference will be held 26–27 June in Lima, Peru under the theme “Sustainable Solutions for Challenging HSE Environments in Latin America.” It will focus on health, safety and environmental challenges facing the Latin American and Caribbean E&P industry.
The 2-day event has an unprecedented technical program that will cover innovative ways to improve HSE management commitment and leadership, best practices, theft and loss prevention, and management of social impact and legal issues.
SPE conducts a series of global integrated workshops where each event travels to different locations around the globe. The second occurrence of such workshop was in Rio de Janeiro, 6–7 March 2013, under the title “Production Forecasting.”
Workshops maximize the exchange of ideas among attendees and presenters through brief technical presentations followed by extensive Q&A periods. This event saw 64 attendees from 6 countries, with 15 technical presentations.
Pictured here is the workshop’s Program Committee with program chair Daniel Miranda (first from right) and Brazil Section chair Farid Shecaira (second from left).
