Aleksei Nelaev, Secretary of Tyumen State Oil and Gas University, receives SPE Star Scholarship

Good news for SPE TSOGU Student Chapter!  Aleksei Nelaev, Student Chapter Secretary and 4th year student of Tyumen State Oil and Gas university, has been chosen as SPE STAR Scholarship recipient! He will receive USD 2,500 as a result of this award.

Aleksei wrote several essays describing his views on the petroleum industry and his own future career as a petroleum engineer. It was easy for him, Aleksey said, because of his specialization is development and exploration of oil and gas fields and also because he is winner and prize holder of many international and all-Russian conferences.

This student chapter continues to move forward and they have even more plans for the future, including participation in scholarship and fellowship programs, participation in conferences and congresses, exchange programs (with universities in France and Germany) and hosting a big conference and forum in the near future.

SPE Student Chapter Tyumen Participates in Conference on Hydraulic Fracturing

Spokesmen of Tyumen SPE Chapter participated in SPE conference titled “Hydraulic Fracturing in Russia: Experience and Perspective” held 28-30 September in Nizhnevartovsk, Western Siberia, Russia. Approximately 132 participants from Russian and international companies presented papers and participated in sessions. One of the most prominent guests at this conference was Michael Economides, a Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Houston, Texas, and Dmitry Chernishev, the technical spokesman of Smith International. The conference was about hydraulic fracturing in Russia. Hydraulic fracturing, as a method of well stimulation, started in USA in the late 1940s. In the Soviet Union, it was used for the first time in 1952. Hydraulic fracturing was initially a primarily completion method for injection wells in the course of peripheral water-flooding.  Later on, in the former Soviet Union, hydraulic fracturing was done in oil wells with river sand employed as proppant material. The second coming of hydraulic fracturing took place consequently on dramatically worsened structure of reserves in Russia in the early 1990s. By now the Russian oil and gas companies have accumulated substantial experience in hydraulic fracturing operations under various geological conditions.
