Distinguished Lecturer Evaluation Contest Winners Announced for 2012-2013

Thank you to all section members for attending Distinguished Lecturer meetings and submitting evaluations during the 2012–2013 DL season.

The winners of the 2012–2013 DL Evaluation Contest are:

  • Less than 150 members: Balikpapan
  • Between 150-500 members: Warri Nigeria
  • More than 500 members: London

A new DL season (2013–2014) begins in September. The evaluation process has been simplified, and you will now be able to complete and submit DL’s evaluations online, utilize the QR code on an evaluation, or email in your evaluations.

To ensure that your section is entered into and wins the 2013–2014 Evaluation Contest, please:

  • Attend all section meetings featuring Distinguished Lecturers.
  • Listen, engage and evaluate the DL’s presentation.
  • Fill out and submit the Section Attendees’ Tour Evaluation form for every DL visit.

Winning sections will receive:

  • USD 500 per winning section to the section account
  • Acknowledgment on SPE.org

2012 Gus Archie Memorial Scholarship Winners Announced

Congratulations to Alexander Restrepo! He has been awarded the 2012 Gus Archie Memorial Scholarship. His scholarship is renewable for up to four years.

Alex is a graduate of the Albuquerque Academy in New Mexico. While attending high school, Alex was selected to attend the Nation Youth Leadership Forum on National Security in Washington, D.C, where he explored American diplomacy, intelligence and defense.

Alex’s outstanding achievements and accomplishments include (but not limited to):

  • National Hispanic Scholar
  • AP Scholar
  • Member of the Science Olympiad Team
  • Albuquerque Academy Varsity Football Team
  • 2011/2012 All Academic Football Team

Alex, is currently a freshman at the Colorado School of Mines pursuing a degree in petroleum engineering. Congratulations again, Alexander!

Congratulations to Katrina Schilling! She has been awarded the 2012 Gus Archie Memorial Scholarship. Her scholarship is renewable for up to four years.

Katrina graduated from Katy High School in Katy, TX where she was the Valedictorian of her class, graduating first out of 592 students. She is attending Texas A&M University where she is enrolled in the Honors Program. She is majoring in petroleum engineering with a minor in Spanish.

Katrina’s achievements and leadership roles include:

  • Member and 3-year letterman on Katy HS Swim Team, Outstanding Girl Swimmer Award
  • Katy ISD Math Excellence Award

Henry Dewitt Smith Fellowship Winner Announced

Congratulations to Mojtaba Pordel Shahri! He has been awarded the 2012 Henry Dewitt Smith Fellowship.

Mojtaba received his BS and MS degrees in petroleum engineering, and he is currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree in petroleum engineering. He earned the 1st rank in both undergraduate and graduate studies in 2008 and 2010 among all the students. Mojtaba also ranked 1st in the University National Entrance Examination of Graduate Program. He has more than twenty publications in different journals and conferences related to petroleum engineering. Mojtaba is currently conducting research on the prediction of reservoir stress path under supervision of Dr. Miska and Dr. Yu at the University of Tulsa Drilling Research Projects (TUDRP).

Marietta Student Chapter Visits Drake’s Well

On April 10 and 11th, a group of Marietta College Society of Petroleum Engineers visited the Drake Well Museum. The chapter was shown a short video about Drake’s well and how it indicated the beginning of the modern petroleum industry in Titusville, Pennsylvania in 1859.

Along with visiting Drake’s well, the student chapter attended a Universal Well Services Hydraulic Fracturing seminar.  The topic of the seminar was the drilling and production process in the industry.
