The “Well Integrity Management: A Deepwater Approach” workshop was held 7–8 November 2012 in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.
“This workshop provided an excellent opportunity for specialists and decision makers to know and talk about the new technologies, best practices, and challenges in the management of well integrity…especially those located in deep waters,” said Otto Luiz Alcantara Santos, workshop chairperson, senior consultant at Petrobras, and of SPE Bahia/Sergipe Section chairperson.
With the support of the SPE Bahia Section, this workshop featured 20 technical presentations from speakers from around the globe. Approximately 65 professionals from 7 countries and 19 different companies attended this event. Representatives from each student chapter in the Bahia/Sergipe SPE Section also volunteered during the implementation of the workshop.
This workshop was a part of a global series of events with the main focus on collecting best practices in well integrity to be used on the creation of the well integrity best practices manual.
Congratulations to the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM), runners up in the 2012 PetroBowl held during the SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition on 8 October.
More than 30 universities from around the world competed, with the Colorado School of Mines taking first place. Congratulations, and thank you to all participants.
The SEG/SBFf/SPE Workshop on Global Perspectives for Deepwater Presalt Exploration and Development, held 11–12 September 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, attracted 187 participants. SPE, in conjunction with the Mexican Section and with support from Pemex, offered the Petroleum Reserves & Resource Estimation—PRMS Application Guidelines Document Workshop 25–26 September in Mexico City.
During the 2-day event, attendees had the opportunity to learn, share experiences, and best practices on the PRMS applications and its guidelines. It also focused on future directions in reserves and resources evaluation and reporting.
The SPE Colombian Section, in conjunction with student chapters and support from the local industry, took the Energy4me program to the most populated island in the world: Santa Cruz del Islote.
Volunteers also visited two schools in Bucaramanga. They were guided by Leonel Solano and provided the students with energy resources, distributed Energy4me books, and other materials donated by local industries. We thank you for your outstanding efforts.
Congratulations to Alexander Restrepo! He has been awarded the 2012 Gus Archie Memorial Scholarship. His scholarship is renewable for up to four years.
Alex is a graduate of the Albuquerque Academy in New Mexico. While attending high school, Alex was selected to attend the Nation Youth Leadership Forum on National Security in Washington, D.C, where he explored American diplomacy, intelligence and defense.

Congratulations to Katrina Schilling! She has been awarded the 2012 Gus Archie Memorial Scholarship. Her scholarship is renewable for up to four years.
Katrina graduated from Katy High School in Katy, TX where she was the Valedictorian of her class, graduating first out of 592 students. She is attending Texas A&M University where she is enrolled in the Honors Program. She is majoring in petroleum engineering with a minor in Spanish.
Katrina’s achievements and leadership roles include:

Katrina intends to be just as involved in the community at Texas A&M as she was in high school. She enjoys taking fitness classes, being involved in organizations, practicing Spanish, traveling and meeting people. Congratulations again, Katrina!
The SPE Brazil Section participated in the 2013 Rio Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition on 17–19 September 2012, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The SPE Brazil Section booth attracted many of the over 40,000 attendees of this year’s event who were interested to learn more about the SPE mission and activities worldwide. They were also interested to learn how one can benefit from becoming SPE member. A special thanks to our SPE Brazil Section members for supporting the organization and helping us to disseminate the SPE mission.
The SPE Mexican Section participated in the Mexican Petroleum Congress 9-13 September in Mexico City. With this event, the Mexican Section was able to display the benefits of our association to some of the most influential individuals in the region’s E&P industry.
The SPE section booth attracted many visitors of the 4,500 plus attending the event who were interested in find out more about SPE and the benefits or becoming a member.

- Attend all section meetings featuring Distinguished Lecturers.
- Listen, engage and evaluate the DL’s presentation.
- Fill out and submit the Section Attendees’ Tour Evaluation form for every DL visit.

The President’s Award for Section Excellence recognizes SPE sections who display exemplary efforts in technology dissemination, section operations, member benefits, society and community benefits and innovation.
