The student chapter at University of Petroleum & Energy Studies has proven that even the new chapters can quickly become quite successful. The students of this chapter hosted Mr. Labastie (2011 SPE President) at a recent inaugural of UPES SPE Magazine Energy Era. The event was also attended by Mr. Manav Kanwar (Secretary, SPE India Council) and Mr. Waleed Refaay (Managing Director, Middle East/India). The chapter is accomplishing their goal of providing members an overall exposure with interaction, participation and competition with present and future professionals of the industry.
UPES hosted UPES Fest 2011, national level fest attended by company professionals from ONGC, Shell, Cairn, Reliance and Petrobangia. The event was sponsored by ONGC, Shell, OBC and UPES.
This chapter has hosted visits from many industry professionals, including Mr. Sudhir Vasudeva, Dr. Tarun Chakraborti and Mr. Santanu, which strengthened the students’ bond with some of the prominent leaders in India. Some student members attended SPE ATW held at Mumbai, as well as a Young Professional workshop at Bangalore. The chapter launched Anubhav Mentorship Program and “Donate a Sunday,” a social service program. They have organized “Safety Demonstration,” where chapter volunteers spread road safety awareness. In an environmental awareness program, the chapter participated in “Tree Festival” along with around 1,200 younger students.
The chapter is rising above obstacles by using consistent effort and organized planning. They have had great support from their university and faculty. They planned orientation presentations for newcomers to the chapter and designed special activities for them. They have become quite skilled at strengthening membership by using notices, posters, mass mailings and classroom publicity. A great big hearty congratulations to the student members of University of Petroleum & Energy Studies SPE Student Chapter for winning SPE Student Chapter of the Month for April! Keep up the extraordinary work!
Chapter members and guests visited the Parkersburg Oil and Gas Museum. The tour started off with a video on how the American oil and gas industry started. The video also showed some old pumping units that used a single line and wooden wheels to pump all the wells in old, large fields.
After the video, the students walked around the museum and discovered the wooden wheels and other old oilfield tools such as horse transported fire carts and a nitro glycerine canister. At the end of the tour, they went outside to look at an old wire line and service truck.
The students said it was amazing to see how far the industry has come in the last century.
