Orhun Aydin is a PhD student in the Energy Resources Engineering Department at Stanford University. He received a master of science degree in Energy Resources Engineering Department at Stanford in 2012. He received his bachelor of science at the Middle East Technical University in Turkey. Orhun was awarded the SPE STAR Scholarship during his last year at Middle East Technical University.

Currently, Orhun is a research assistant at the Stanford Center for Reservoir Forecasting (S.C.R.F.), where he works with Professor Caers on model complexity to answer how complex we need to make earth models or reservoir models to make decisions. Outside of his responsibilities as a student researcher, he is also the treasurer of the Stanford Student Chapter of SPE.

February Student Chapter of the Month

Congratulations to February Student Chapter of the Month

Congratulations to the University of Cairo for being selected February Student Chapter of the Month.

Although the University of Cairo student chapter faced obstacles, they accomplished many of their goals during this academic year.

One of the student chapter’s greatest accomplishments was launching their online radio called “SPE Radio.” After long periods of training, preparing, and hard work the Radio Committee could record different episodes of interested programs that targeted the youth.  The recording included technical and social programs, interviews, reports and events that gave more information about SPE and SPE activities.

Along with the “Online Radio,” the University of Cairo Student Chapter excelled in the Sub-regional Paper Contest, which the student chapter hosted on 8 December.  The student chapter won 1st place in the Master’s Division and 2nd place in the Undergraduate Division.  For the first time, the student chapter will have representation at the Regional Paper Contest in April 2013.

We have outlined only a few of the University of Cairo student chapter events. They have many other goals they are working hard to achieve.

Congratulations again to the University of Cairo for winning SPE February Chapter of the Month.

December SPE Student Chapter

Congratulations to the December SPE Student Chapter of the Month – Kazakh National Technical University

December SPE Student Chapter

Congratulations to the Kazakh National Technical University for being named December Student Chapter of the Month. Located in Almaty, Kazakhstan this student chapter has had a very busy year.

The KNTU student chapter started November off rolling with activity after activity. One of the first activities of the month was the “CollNanoInd2012”. Scientists of the International science society in the field of colloid chemistry and nanotechnologies participated in a discussion of not only scientific problems, but problems of introducing innovations into educational and industrial spheres.

On 13 November, KNTU partnered with Kazakh-British Technical University to organize the V International Forum. In the framework of a forum, there was a Round Table Plenary session with presentations from companies and SPE professional representatives.

During the same time frame, the busy KNTU student chapter attended the “Oil and Gas Horizons” 2012 Conference; one of the largest petroleum conferences in Russia organized by the Gubkin University Student Chapter. During the conference, two members of the KNTU student chapter participated in the student paper contest, and placed first in the contest.

The KNTU student chapter has proven to shine with successful events, which is no surprise why the student chapter was awarded the “2012 Gold Standard Award”.

Congratulations, Kazakh National Technical University for winning SPE December Student Chapter of the Month!

Well Integrity Workshop Held in Brazil

The “Well Integrity Management: A Deepwater Approach” workshop was held 7–8 November 2012 in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.

“This workshop provided an excellent opportunity for specialists and decision makers to know and talk about the new technologies, best practices, and challenges in the management of well integrity…especially those located in deep waters,” said Otto Luiz Alcantara Santos, workshop chairperson, senior consultant at Petrobras, and of SPE Bahia/Sergipe Section chairperson.

With the support of the SPE Bahia Section, this workshop featured 20 technical presentations from speakers from around the globe. Approximately 65 professionals from 7 countries and 19 different companies attended this event. Representatives from each student chapter in the Bahia/Sergipe SPE Section also volunteered during the implementation of the workshop.

This workshop was a part of a global series of events with the main focus on collecting best practices in well integrity to be used on the creation of the well integrity best practices manual.
