During SPEUI Week, the student chapter reached out to the communities at the Prem Dham Old Age Home and Chechire Home of the Challenged. This first, in a series of programs, was aimed to show love and care to individuals with disabilities in their community.

Career Development Presentations

Industry visits and technical presentations from Chevron, Schlumberger, Baker Hughes, and British Petroleum enlightened members on company recruitment processes and how to apply for jobs, and Schlumberger organized an internship test for qualified students as well. Students listened attentively while the Ambassador Lecture Programme ended the year with young professionals giving career development presentations, sharing their experiences with student members, and giving career advice.

Catch Them Young Program

The Catch Them Young Program was organized to awaken the interest of senior secondary school pupils in petroleum engineering. It was not all work; members and invited friends had a nice time easing off academic stress while enjoying barbeque.

The SPEUI members organized a rally to inform the university community about SPE. A touch of white or blue was chosen as the dress code and engineering overalls, hard hats, umbrellas, and goggles were also included.

Guest Lecturer Dr. Qin Wenting Speaks at University of Petroleum China, Beijing

On April 21, 2012, the SPE Student Chapter CUPB held a technical lecture titled “Water Cresting Control with Bilateral Water Sink Technique in Horizontal Wells for Heavy Oil with Bottom Water”. The guest speaker  was Dr. Qin Wenting, a graduate of Louisiana State University, and her main research interest included the exploration of heavy oil reservoirs with strong bottom water drives and enhanced oil recovery.

Dr. Qin introduced the Bilateral Water Sink (BWS), a new cold production technique to improve heavy oil recovery to the audience. The principle of the BWS method is to suppress water cresting by separately producing oil and water simultaneously from two vertically parallel horizontal wells completed in the oil and water zones.

Dr. Qin ended her presentation with a Q&A session.

Mehran Students Take Final Field Trips as Undergraduates

SPE Mehran Student Chapter arranged field trips for the final-year students. While visiting the Sawan gas field, the students were briefed about the gas-processing plant there, including its working capacity and criteria. Mr. Gul Hassan Dars briefed students about the history of the field.

Twenty five final-year students also visited the Kadanwaari Gas field. Students visited the sampling laboratory, central control room (CCR) and processing plant. Technical personnel at the field told the students about the plant operation, gas composition and equipment used at the field.

Mr. Nisar Shaikh of New Horizon Exploration and Production Limited donated several technical videos and presentations to SPE Mehran. Student chapter thank the NHEPL for the generous donation.
