SPE Student Chapter University of Oklahoma’s November Activities

The OU Chapter deserves a special mention for all the hard work they have been doing this semester.

Their main activities this month included:

Relay for Life Oklahoma Summit: The Chapter was honored as one of the top 15 teams invited to the Oklahoma Summit for Relay for Life. The conference was held at the Magnuson Hotel and Meridian Convention Center in Oklahoma City and featured many guest speakers, all of whom had been personally affected by cancer. The summit was a great way to get members excited about Relay for Life.

The OU Chapter was honored to receive the HOPE Award from American Cancer Society for the fourth year in a row.  The Chapter has continued to be the highest fundraiser at the annual Relay for Life event for the High Plains Division, with a cumulative of $57,000 raised over the past four years. I’m sure everyone will agree that this is a fantastic achievement.

Sooner Saturday: Sooner Saturday is a campus‐wide day for high school seniors, transfer students and their families to learn more about the University of Oklahoma. OU SPE had members, in particular active freshmen, spoke to incoming students about petroleum engineering and the OU Student Chapter.

Participation at ATCE: What a fantastic photo of the OU Chapter members at this year’s PetroBowl! (insert petrobowl pic).  It looks like they had a great time.  In addition to this, the Chapter received their Gold Standard Award at the Student General Session (insert gold standard pic)– congratulations OU Student Chapter!

Congratulations SPE Student Chapter of the Month for December – Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas!

The Gubkin Student Chapter has been working very hard and deserves recognition for their efforts – our student activities email box has been overflowing with activity reports from this chapter!

The Chapter assisted in organizing the 9th all-Russian Conference “New technologies in the gas industry”, from 4-7 November.  This was an excellent opportunity for young professionals, scientists and students to exchange their experiences and views on industry development. The event is held every two years and is sponsored by Gazprom Holding.  Two Chapter Officers (Vlada Streletskaya and Peter Osipenko) were on the organizing committee, but all Chapter members helped with the event by meeting guests at their hotels, preparing the hand-out materials for participants, and helping the Section and registrations team.

The Chapter was founded in 2003, but the members have recently celebrated the last two years as being the extremely active years– congratulations! (can we have a slice of the cake please?)

In late October the SPE Arctic and Extreme Environments Conference was held in Moscow, Russia.

The Gubkin Chapter helped the SPE Moscow Section by working on the exhibition stand.  They also helped the organizing committee with other tasks that occurred as a result of the conference.

The University organized the third international student Scientific and Practical Conference “Oil and Gas Horizons”. One event during the conference was a Distinguished Lecturer seminar with Mike Mayorov (Baker Hughes).  Students learnt about the basic factors which every student should pay attention to: time management, special knowledge, social work and attending professional courses organized by oil companies. The students were motivated by the lecture, and asked many questions on how to improve their presentation skills.

The Chapter was heavily involved in the third International Student Scientific and Practical Conference “Oil and Gas Horizons 2011”.  The Chapter organized an excursion for attendees through the center of Moscow.  There were student from Romania, Germany, Poland and Kazakhstan, in addition to some students from Russian Universities outside of Moscow.  Sights of the tour included the Tretyakov gallery, the Red Square, Alexander’s Garden, Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the State Universal Store and Arbat Street.

The Gubkin Chapter was asked to make a video as part of a project for the World Petroleum Congress, which will be held in Qatar this December.  Led by Arthur Perederiy, Chapter Secretary, the task was completed successfully.  The film was contained interviews and information in which highlighted the Russian culture, with particular focus on the petroleum industry.  The Chapter members are proud of the final result.

Congratulations Gubkin Student Chapter – keep up the good work!

Congratulations SPE Student Chapter of the Month for November – Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology!

Please join us in congratulating RGIPT – they have been extremely busy the past month!

The chapter organised “A Blood Donation Camp: Ardaan” at their campus, for the first time in RGIPT, in association with Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University. The aim was to spread awareness on the importance of blood donation and how it can save lives. Over 70 students participated.

A poster competition titled ‘Accidents in Oil and Energy Sector’ was organised. 45 abstracts were initially submitted, and 12 teams were then selected and asked to create one poster per team. The posters were judged on the content covered, organization of matter, quality/clarity of poster and how well the team answered questions from a panel of 6 judges, including faculty members. The three highest scoring teams were awarded with a prize.

The chapter launched a career guidance program, covering schools in and around the city. The aim was to make young students realize what they could achieve by making their way to the petroleum industry.

Topics covered included:

  • An introduction to the petroleum industry and importance of this sector to the society.
  • The role of petroleum engineers and their demand around the world

The RGIPT Chapter is going to continue the program in other schools in the future.

Additionally, over 100 students attended a Distinguished Lecturer session led by Mr. Chaman Lal, General Manager (Reservoir Division, KDMIPE Dehradun), who is also the Membership Chairperson of the SPE North India Section. He shared his vast experience of petroleum reservoir industry with the students.

RGIPT have shown that a chapter can give back to the community, educate their members and raise awareness of the importance of the industry to future generations.  Congratulations RGIPT!
