Books, Monographs, Reprints
As part of its mission to collect and disseminate technical information, SPE publishes books, monographs, and a reprint series. These publications are available for purchase through the SPE online Store.
Types of Publications
Monographs
Monographs focuses on how to apply a specific technology, and volumes are intended for practicing engineers.
Textbooks
SPE began publishing textbooks in 1972 to ensure the availability of high-quality textbooks for undergraduate courses in petroleum engineering. Typically, textbooks stress understanding through numerous examples and exercises with selected fundamentals and applications.
"Interdisciplinary" Titles
In 2005, SPE began publishing concise tutorial books focusing on interdisciplinary subjects and written for a multidisciplinary audience. The goal is to promote collaboration in technology among geoscientists and engineers in the upstream sector.
Reprints/Special Collections of Papers
These books, or more recently CDs, provide up-to-date collections of useful and significant technical papers dealing with a subject in a manner that provides quick, compact reference. The technical papers included are selected by a committee of volunteers with expertise in the topic.
Other Books
SPE also publishes numerous books intended primarily for practicing engineers. These may be relevant for course adoption at the university level. The most notable of these is the Petroleum Engineering Handbook, widely recognized as a must-have reference for practicing engineers.
Submit Your Book Proposals and Topic Ideas
Ideas for Book Topics
Is there a topic you would like to see covered in our literature? SPE values your suggestions for books that will benefit the petroleum engineering community.
SPE will review all written book proposals submitted for publishing consideration. Prior to making a publishing commitment, we will work with a committee of industry experts to assess author qualifications, timeliness of the technical subject matter, and to evaluate the potential market for each considered title.
Guidelines for Book Authors
Once your book proposal has been committee approved, this is the information you’ll need to keep in mind:
