How to Submit a Paper for Peer Review?

SPE has launched a new online peer review system designed to help us improve peer review timeliness. The system is called Manuscript Central. It is not tied to SPE's meeting manuscript system. Authors desiring peer review should be able to submit their papers in 10-15 minutes. A guide for authors has information on the submission process.

Before Submitting Your Paper for Peer Review

  • Make sure your paper is a good candidate for peer review (many excellent meeting papers are not necessarily good candidates for peer review). It is advised that you make a few notes about why your paper should be reviewed for use in the author cover letter section of the submission process.
  • Determine which SPE journal is appropriate for your paper (SPE's journals do not cover the full-breadth of topical coverage from SPE meetings, so we may not have a journal appropriate for all papers)
  • Gather information on your co-authors -- name, company (institution), location (city, state/province, country), and email address. Email addresses must be unique for each author.
  • Gather transfer of copyright forms from all authors
  • Check the formatting and style guidelines.

Authors of Papers Prepared for SPE Meetings

The process for submitting a meeting manuscript for peer review has changed. SPE's prior peer review system was tied to the meeting manuscript system, so authors could choose peer review as part of that submission. Authors must now make a separate submission for peer review.

Following submission of a meeting manuscript, authors are presented with a link for information about submitting their paper for peer review. They then see information on the coverage of SPE's journals with links for submission to each journal. Authors can immediately complete the peer review submission if desired. If authors choose not to submit immediately, they can always do so later using the links below. A few things that may be helpful:

  • Format: You do not need to modify the format of your paper from the meeting submission, you can use the same document (the new system also accepts Word 2007 and LaTeX documents, which the meeting manuscript system does not)
  • Transfer of Copyright: If you have submitted transfer of copyright forms for all authors to the meeting, you do not have to submit them to the peer review system (staff can access the meeting copies). But papers cannot be peer reviewed without transfer of copyright, so if you have not submitted the transfer of copyright forms, you will need to do so before your paper can be considered.

A guide for authors includes screen shots of what you will see online during the submission process.

Manuscripts Submitted Directly for Peer Review

Authors of papers that were not prepared for an SPE meeting should follow SPE's formatting and style guidelines for their manuscript. The peer review system accepts a wide range of file formats -- including Word 2007 and LaTeX. Figures and tables can be embedded in the text or submitted as separate files -- whatever is easiest for you.

SPE requires that authors of papers submitted directly for review provide a temporary transfer of copyright while the paper is in review. If the manuscript is accepted for publication, authors will need to sign a permanent transfer of copyright. If the paper is not accepted, copyright will revert to the author. Please complete SPE's temporary transfer of copyright form.

Submitting Your Paper

The submission process is easy. Just click on one of the links below and follow the instructions to submit your paper to that journal. For a preview of what you'll see online, check the guide for authors.

Dual submissions will be rejected -- you may submit to one journal only.
