Nico van Wingen Memorial Graduate Fellowship in Petroleum Engineering

The Nico van Wingen Memorial Graduate Fellowship in Petroleum Engineering is supported by the van Wingen fund of the SPE Foundation. Up to two awards will be given in the amount of USD 5,000 each per year. Eligible students must be members of an official SPE Student Chapter and must be at the Ph.D. level intending to pursue careers in academia.

The Nico van Wingen Memorial Graduate Fellowship in Petroleum Engineering is renewable up to 4 years with an annual confirmation from the student's advisor. The confirmation should include the progress of the student and a justification for renewal of the fellowship.

Each university, with an SPE Student Chapter, offering a Ph.D. degree in petroleum engineering may nominate one candidate.

Nico van Wingen was a graduate of the California Institute of Technology, and earned an MS degree in petroleum engineering from the University of California and a DSc degree from Adamson University in Manila. Mr. van Wingen worked as an evaluation engineer, consultant and then as a professor of petroleum engineering at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Southern California. Mr. van Wingen played a major role in the development of oil production technology in the US, Austria, Canada, West Germany, Iran, Turkey and Venezuela. He was active on many SPE committees and won the Anthony F Lucas Gold Medal and SPE Distinguished Member award in 1985.

Requirements for an Application

  • Nomination submitted by the SPE Student Chapter Faculty Advisor or Department Chair
  • Application completed by student
  • Statement of Purpose completed by student
  • Official Transcripts for all institutions attended
  • Two Sealed Letters of Recommendation
  • Student Resume

All documents must be in English and submitted together with the nomination form from the Faculty Advisor/Department Chair to the Nico van Wingen Memorial Fellowship Committee, SPE Foundation, PO Box 833836, Richardson, Texas, 75083-3836, USA. The submission deadline is 1 November of each year.
