Distinguished Member

Established in 1983, the Distinguished Member award recognizes SPE members who achieve distinction deemed worthy of special recognition. It acknowledges members who have attained eminence in the petroleum industry or the academic community, and/or who have made unusually significant contributions to SPE.

Distinguished Membership is limited to 1% of SPE professional members. Those who are selected as Honorary Members, recipients of the Anthony F. Lucas Gold Medal, John Franklin Carll Award, Lester C. Uren Award, DeGolyer Distinguished Service Medal, Public Service Award, or Distinguished Service Award, as well as the immediate past president of SPE automatically become Distinguished Members.

Criteria

The SPE Distinguished Member Award is an endeavor to honor members of the Society of Petroleum Engineers who have achieved distinction deemed worthy of special recognition by the Society. It is a means of acknowledging members who have attained eminence in the petroleum industry or the academic world, or who have made unusually significant contributions to an SPE section or the Society.

  • Distinguished Membership is restricted to one percent (1%) of the Society membership, excluding students.
  • The candidate must be a living member of SPE
  • The candidate must
    • have won recognition for outstanding or notable contributions to some phase of professional activity encompassed by SPE
    • achieved distinction as an eminent authority in some aspect of petroleum engineering. Examples are:
      • exploration
      • production
      • engineering applications
      • science
      • teaching
      • management through:
        • The publication of articles and/or books of merit on work supervised or performed by the candidate
        • The granting of patents to the candidate on scientific and technical developments in various fields of professional activity encompassed by SPE
        • The direction of important research or engineering work
        • Responsibility for nationally known developments or improvements in his/her field
    • have exhibited notable and outstanding service to an SPE section or the Society.
  • A living member shall be automatically elected as an SPE Distinguished Member if he/she is :
    • a past-president of SPE or AIME
    • an SPE-AIME Honorary Member
    • a recipient of the
      • Anthony F. Lucas Gold Medal
      • John Franklin Carll Award
      • Lester C. Uren Award
      • DeGolyer Distinguished Service Medal
      • Public Service Award
      • Distinguished Service Award. 
  • An SPE member may only be elected as a Distinguished Member once.
  • Current SPE Board of Directors members are ineligible for the award during their service and for 2 years after, except for the SPE President who is automatically elected as an SPE Distinguished Member immediately upon the conclusion of their term as President, assuming they have not been previously elected.
  • Candidates remain on the active consideration list for 3 years.
  • If a candidate is not selected during the 3-year active consideration cycle, they can be re-nominated the following year if all other eligibility requirements are met.
