Get Involved in Energy Education

In 2003, SPE identified a need to become more active in educating students and the public about the energy industry. Many myths about our industry abound; some of them negatively affect students decisions whether to consider a career in our industry. SPE has established an Energy Information Committee to coordinate activities aimed at both education and career information.

But one committee cannot have the reach that is necessary to make a real impact.  Individual members need to get involved in speaking to school and civic groups, working with teachers, participating in career days, and more.

What Can You Accomplish?

  • Influence the views of a new generation about energy
  • Enhance students' technological literacy
  • Motivate students to consider engineering as a career
  • Educate students, their families, and the general public about the oil and gas industry
  • Establish a dialogue with teachers about energy education

Why Should You Get Involved?

  • Enhance your public-speaking skills
  • Give something back to your community
  • Support local educators
  • Meet lots of interesting people
  • Be an ambassador for the industry
  • Be a positive role model for future generations

How Can You Get Started?

  • Get involved in your section's educational activities
  • Start an education program in your section
  • Contact a local school or administrative district to offer yourself as a speaker
  • Talk with your child's teacher about speaking opportunities
  • Look for opportunities to speak to local clubs and civic organizations
  • Develop Engineers Week  activities in your section
  • Review information on making an effective presentation

What Tools Are Available?

  • Take a look at the new Energy4Me  website for ideas and materials you can use
  • Find current energy statistics for use in a presentation

The Energy Information Committee is developing additional resources to empower members to get involved in energy education. Look for additional resources on this website and Energy4Me  as they are available.
