Volunteer with SPE

Much of the work of the Society is accomplished through the efforts of dedicated volunteers. Thousands of volunteers around the globe provide the energy that makes the Society function. SPE is grateful to these members and encourages other members to consider volunteering. Numerous opportunities are available at both the local and international level that allow you to contribute in an area of interest, while benefiting yourself and the Society.

SPE has a large number of volunteer opportunities. Some committees are limited in size, while others (e.g., Editorial Review Committee) may include several hundred members. Some committees require specialized expertise or knowledge, while others do not. Most standing committee appointments are made between June and October. The number of vacancies to be filled on standing committees can vary from year to year. In addition to standing committees, SPE uses a variety of ad hoc, or short term, committees to address specific issues. These committees are formed to complete a specific task, then disbanded when their work is complete.

The membership of SPE committees reflects a geographic, corporate, and technical diversity. Otherwise highly qualified applicants may not be appointed because the committee already includes representatives with a similar background. Volunteering does not mean you will be appointed to a committee, but does ensure that you will be considered.

How can you volunteer?

  • Contact the officers of your local section to assist in planning programs and activities. Whereas SPE committee appointments are concentrated during a few months of the year, local sections typically welcome volunteers throughout the year to assist with various activities.
  • Complete our Volunteer Form to be considered for volunteer opportunities on committees as they arise.
  • If you have an area of technical expertise, consider participating in peer review as a member of the Editorial Review Committee. Read more.
  • Energy education is an important initiative for affecting public perceptions of our industry and attracting new talent to consider careers in oil and gas. There are many ways you can get involved.

Why should you volunteer?

  • Build your leadership skills
  • Add your expertise and knowledge to the planning of technical programs and activities
  • Develop valuable contacts with industry peers
  • Introduce others to the benefits of SPE
  • Encourage young people to join our industry
  • Enhance your presentation skills
  • Contribute to SPE programs by identifying emerging technologies/topics

Not enough time for a regular commitment?

You can still contribute to the Society by submitting technical papers to meetings, participating in the TIGs relevant to your discipline, attending section meetings, introducing colleagues to the benefits of SPE membership, and providing input on other topics of interest. You can also help spread the word about SPE's mission and operations by using the new SPE Overview  [1.3 MB] that you can use to speak to groups or individuals.
