Petroleum Professional Certification

Associations, societies and professions offer voluntary certification programs to their members to bring increased recognition of the recipient's high professional standards and commitment to the profession. For the petroleum industry, the environmental and consumer era of the past few decades have given the public greater awareness of pollution, energy, and the need for a high level of industry professionalism. At the request of the membership, SPE has established this program to provide a Society-sponsored Petroleum Professional Certification the Middle East, Asia Pacific, United States and other regions that express interest in the program.

The SPE Petroleum Professional Certification Program requires that applicants demonstrate a minimum level of technical knowledge to be certified. This is established through a four-step evaluation of each applicant.

1. Education

An undergraduate engineering degree from an accredited institution.

2. Examination

An examination to measure the level of engineering fundamentals learned from education and to measure the applicant's ability to solve practical engineering problems. The examination may be waived if the applicant has previously passed a written examination qualifying him/her to practice in petroleum engineering as a registered, licensed, chartered, or professional engineer.

3. Experience

Experience and training in the engineering community, usually for a minimum of 4 years.

4. Ethics

Professional peer references as to performance and attitudes.

5. Membership

Member in good standing with the Society of Petroleum Engineers

Why Consider Certification?

There are several reasons to consider becoming an SPE Certified Petroleum Professional, even if it is not required by your employer:

  • Public and professional recognition of compliance with the standards established by SPE for the Petroleum Professional
  • Self-satisfaction of complying with the spirit of the certification on a voluntary basis to demonstrate one's commitment to the profession
  • Recognition of your technical knowledge from your peers.

While the US, UK, and several other countries have programs of professional engineering registration, many other countries do not have such a program. The SPE Petroleum Professional Certification offers individuals in those countries an opportunity to demonstrate their professional competence in a similar manner to the established programs in the US and UK.
