Starting a New Chapter

  1. There must be a letter submitted, signed by the University Department Head, indicating the name of the degree program, the length of the program in years and a list of the course requirements. The institution must offer a degree program in petroleum engineering or other industry related course of study. SPE will obtain a preliminary approval from the Board Regional Director before proceeding with the remaining requirements. Once we have the preliminary approval, the remaining requirements are:
  2. There must be a minimum of 15 new or current SPE Student Members attending an institution to consider the formation of a chapter. Please provide a list of the student members including their member number.
  3. The Student Members must have a sponsoring section. The sponsoring section must be the section that is located nearest to the institution. For a list of the sections go here.   4. The students must select a faculty sponsor. Any candidate for faculty sponsor must be a member of SPE to be considered. After selection, the Faculty Sponsor Nomination Form should be completed and a biographical sketch of the nominee should be attached to the form.
  5. The Petition for SPE Student Chapter Form must be signed by at least 15 SPE Student Members wishing to form the chapter, by the proposed faculty sponsor, and by the department head.
  6. A meeting of all Student Members wishing to form a chapter must be called and officers elected. As many officers as necessary may be elected, but it is suggested that at least the following positions are filled: president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. All attending the meeting should be aware that these officer positions are provisional and cannot be considered official until the chapter has been approved by the SPE Board of Directors. After the election is held, the Officer Report Form listing these officers must be completed.
  7. All the forms and letters listed must be submitted to SPE once they are completed. The material will then be given to the SPE Board of Directors for approval. Upon Board approval, the chapter will receive U.S.$50.00 financial assistance grant and chapter stationery to begin chapter operations. You can access these forms here.
