Vol. 58 No. 10
October 2006
Several previously inactive SPE sections—Congo, Maracaibo, Monagas, Sabah, and Sakhalin—have been resurrected this year as a result of the diligent efforts of SPE officers and volunteers. The Sakhalin Section in Russia was established in 1994 and became inactive 3 years later. The section now has more than 20 members, up from six members a year ago. The Congo Section in Pointe Noire succeeded in doubling membership in recent weeks.
Other sections in the process of reactivation with new officers appointed include Western Venezuela (Maracaibo) and Monagas (Maturin) Venezuela. SPE members with Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA and other organizations have worked together to begin regular meetings of these two sections and are already seeing significant membership growth.
The Sabah Section in Malaysia was established in 2003 but floundered after its first year. SPE Asia Pacific staff have worked with local members from Malaysian state oil company Petronas and soon will have officers appointed and new members enrolled, with section events and meetings to follow later this year.
The development of new sections in Chad and the U.S. Pacific Northwest is also under way.
The SPE Board of Directors has approved the creation of a quarterly magazine that will focus on such contemporary issues as the big crew change, finding and retaining talent, integrating international work forces, leadership styles, and ethics. An editorial board chaired by 2007 SPE President Jaleel Al-Khalifa of Saudi Aramco will help direct the magazine’s content. The new publication will be titled Talent & Technology and will be mailed to all SPE members beginning next year.
