Regional Update

Africa

  • Shell and Centurion reported test results from the Luzi-1 well drilled on the eastern side of the West Manzala Concession in Egypt. The well encountered gas-bearing zones in both the Upper and Lower Abu Madi formations. The lower -formation tested at a gas rate of 9 MMcf/D with 123 B/D of condensate.
  • OMV and ETAP discovered and tested the Nawara 1 exploration well in the Jenein Sud Permit in southern Tunisia. Flow rate was 5,970 BOPD and 1.6 MMcf/D of gas.
  • Repsol, Woodside, and Hellenic Petroleum reported an oil find in Block NC-209 in Libya’s Sirte basin. The well is located southeast of Tripoli.
  • Hardman Resources reported oil flow from the Mputa-1 exploration well, located 220 km northwest of the Ugandan capital, Kampala. The well tested at 300 BOPD.

Asia

  • CNOOC and Husky Energy announced a discovery of gas exceeding 3.5 Tcf with Well LW 3-1-1 in the northern South China Sea.  The find is located in the Zhujiangkou basin 250 km from Hong Kong. CNOOC also reported discovery of an oil and gas field off China’s northeastern coast. The LD 6-2-1 well, located in Liaodong Bay, tested at 620 BOPD and 240 Mcf/D of gas.
  • LG Intl. Corp., Korean Natl. Oil Corp., and Vertom, a Kazakhstan company, reported an oil discovery in Kazakhstan with reserves estimated at 20 million bbl. The find is located in one of three blocks in Kazakhstan’s ADA development area.
  • Tullow Oil commenced gas production from the Bangora-1 well in Bangladesh Block 9. The Bangora-2 and a third appraisal well are planned, with two additional wells contingent on results.
  • Soco reported test results on the TGT-3X exploration well in Block 16-1 offshore Vietnam. The 68-m pay zone flowed 9,008 BOPD and 5.4 MMcf/D of gas.

Australia

  • Operator Shell E&P, OMV New Zealand, and Todd Pohokura Ltd. delivered first gas from the Pohokura Project in New Zealand. The field is the second largest in New Zealand and is expected to produce approximately 40,000 BOEPD at peak.
  • ChevronTexaco Australia announced a gas find at the Chandon-1 wildcat well on Permit WA-268-P in the Greater Gorgon region of the northwest shelf offshore Western Australia. The well was drilled in 1200 m of water.
  • Apache Corp. tested the Gnu-1 well in the Reindeer/Caribou Field on the WA 209P Permit on Australia’s northwest shelf. The well reported flows of 26 MMcf/D of gas and 61 B/D of condensate.

Europe

  • Operator Statoil, Petoro A/S, Hydro, and Eni Norge A/S found gas on wildcat Well 6608/10-11S in Production License 128 on the Trost Prospect. The prospect is located in the Norwegian Sea 1 km west of Norway’s Norne field.
  • Dana Petroleum reported test results from three North Sea exploration wells in the U.K. and The Netherlands. The East Causeway Well 211/23d-17z yielded 14,500 BOPD from the western fault block, and the 211/23b-11 well on the eastern fault block yielded 7,500 BOPD. In the Dutch North Sea, the E18-6 well tested at 45 MMcf/D of gas.
  • Island Oil and Gas encountered a gross 100-ft gas column on exploration Well 49/23-1 at the Old Head of Kinsale in the Celtic Sea. The well was drilled in a water depth of 296 ft to a total depth of 4,133 ft offshore Ireland.

Middle East

  • Saudi Aramco discovered a gas field 50 km south of the Al Ghawar field in the Eastern Province. The Kassab-1 field has a production capacity of 16.2 MMcf/D.
  • Dana Gas and Emarat completed operations of the first phase of the Hamriyah Gas Pipeline Project. The first phase involved construction of a 10-in. pipeline connected to an existing Emarat pipeline pressure-reducing station; it will deliver gas to the new Hamriyah power station of the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority.

North America

  • Operator Total and Nexen confirmed an oil discovery in the Alaminos Canyon Block 856 No. 2 appraisal well drilled in 7,800 ft of water to 15,625 ft approximately 140 miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM).
  • Hess Corp. logged oil pay on the deepwater Pony Prospect on Green Canyon Block 468 in the GOM. The well, drilled to 32,448 ft, encountered 475 ft of oil-saturated sandstone.
  • Operator Nexen and Eni found gas on the Longhorn exploration well in the deepwater GOM, 195 km southeast of New Orleans in Mississippi Canyon Block 546. The well was drilled to a depth of more than 3900 m in a water depth of 750 m.

South America

  • Operator Petrobras, Norse Energy, and Queiroz Galvao Perfuracoes tested two wells in the Manati field in the Camamu basin, Southern Bahia, Brazil. Combined flow results were 63.5 MMcf/D of gas.   
  • Antrim Energy made a second oil discovery in Argentina on the Los Patos 1005 well. Initial flow rates of 345 B/D of 43°API crude were recorded.
