Vol. 59 No. 1
January 2007
Fifteen SPE sections marked milestone anniversaries in 2006 that included one 60-year, one 40-year, and one 25-year anniversary. The longevity and talent that these sections embody offer examples of the shared mission of more than 160 SPE sections worldwide. Through successful collaboration of SPE and its members, sections throughout the world bring together petroleum and energy industry professionals to discuss common issues, to network, and to stay abreast of technical developments through timely presentations.
The SPE Delta Section is active again following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina—just in time to celebrate its 60-year anniversary. Members and guests gathered at a reception in November to “honor the past and herald the future.” Bill Cobb, 2008 SPE President, was a special guest at the milestone event. Legion of Honor member Jim Rike presented event attendees with historical information about the Delta Section and the offshore industry. The Section’s Senior Adviser, Rike is the recipient of the 1991 SPE Distinguished Member Award and the 1990 SPE Production Engineering Award, and was named a 2006 SPE Honorary Member during the 2006 Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition.

Established in 1946 in New Orleans, the Delta Section was formed just one year after Louisiana held its first offshore lease sale. As pointed out by Rike and Dean McPhearson, Director of SPE Central and Southeast North America Region, the section has served as a frontier springboard for the development and enhancement of the worldwide offshore industry. In the 1950s, the section was called upon to transfer knowledge acquired in World War II to achieve success for the energy sector offshore. Section members have continued to help drive the industry’s offshore experience, participating in development of the first offshore pipeline in 1954, the first 3-leg jackup drilling rig in 1955, and the first subsea well in 1961. Subsequent achievements have included subsalt and horizontal drilling, frac-packing for sand control, and spar production units.

The SPE Delta Section has more than 800 members, including 94 senior members, 248 25-year members, and 45 Legion of Honor members.
The SPE Golden Gate Section 40th anniversary dinner program began with opening remarks by Chairman of the Golden Gate Section Jerry Hale and was followed by a talk on the history of California oil and gas by Hal Bopp, Supervisor of the California State Oil and Gas Div. of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources. 2006 SPE President Eve Sprunt presided over the awards presentation. The anniversary event, sponsored by Chevron, Continental Airlines, Hewlett-Packard, ITT, Schlumberger, and Streamsim, featured door prizes and a silent auction.

Sponsors included Baker Hughes, ExxonMobil, Halliburton, KMC Oiltools Overseas, Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering, Murphy Oil, Petronas, Sime Darby Engineering, Schlumberger, Sarawak Shell, and Transocean Drilling.
SPE KL Section Chairman and General Manager Encik Ramlan Malek of Petronas acknowledged member achievements and contributions. About 140 people, representing past and present section officers, members of the SPE KL Section, and their invited guests, attended the celebration dinner.
