Robert K. Perrons of Shell E&P examines what the oil and gas industry could learn from other international business sectors.

SPE’s Board of Directors has approved a new Petroleum Resources Management System, ending two years of intense collaboration by SPE, the World Petroleum Council, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, and the Society of Petroleum Evaluation Engineers. The new system consolidates, builds on, and replaces guidance previously contained in the 1997 hydrocarbons reserves definitions, the 2000 resources classification, and the 2001 guidelines for reserves/resources evaluation.
New technology is enabling an increasing string of exploration and development successes in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. Breakthrough seismic acquisition techniques for subsalt imaging and key innovations in drilling, completions, and facilities design are driving field developments in 8,000-ft waters and preparing the industry to push onward to 10,000 ft.
