Session 1: What Drives CSR?
09:00 - 12:30
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a modern day term that attempts to describe how companies execute their business in a sustainable manner given the current climate of ever increasing ethical and social complexity. Today’s companies operate in multifaceted environments involving many divergent views from an array of stakeholders. Since there exists no single and universal view of “proper CSR”, this session will strive to provide a close look at our industry’s current values surrounding the complex morality behind today’s corporate decision making process.
Session 2: Beyond Compliance
14:00 - 17:00
Companies are expected to comply with local laws and customs. However, they
often exceed those expectations to go beyond basic compliance. What motivates
corporations to go above and beyond? Where and how do they spend their
resources on social responsibility? Everything a company does affects its
profits, success and image with the public. Ensuring that companies meet
the minimum standards of acceptable conduct affects the lives of everyone
around them, but by establishing higher standards, a company has an even
greater effect on the community at large by providing leadership and
maintaining credibility.
There are various issues, including corporate governance, transparency, ethical codes of conduct, and organisational adherence, that are important for organisations to understand. A culture of compliance is not always enough; a culture of believing and acting upon corporate social responsibility is what has a real impact. This session will explore the ethics and guiding principles that drive companies to go beyond basic compliance and act responsibly. Presenters will discuss corporate governance, its impact accountability, transparency and actions in terms of social responsibility and how these principles affect the bottom line.

Session 3: Investing in Human Capital
09:00 - 12:30
Human capital is among the foremost issues facing governments and societies in the region in which we operate and indeed within our companies themselves. This may include not only training and managing our own employees both technically and more broadly, but also strengthening and assisting economic growth where we operate through employment, education, the transfer of knowledge and skills, and support for the rule of law and human rights. Promotion of skills, knowledge and experience of local citizens inside the company, who can contribute directly to business success, as well as local citizens outside the company who can contribute to the independent economic development of the societies in which we operate, are essential elements of corporate social responsibility. This discussion will explore the implications of these responsibilities for business decisions on where and how to invest in order to build the human capital that will strengthen our companies and contribute to the long term success of our host communities.
Session 4: Health, Safety & Environment
14:00 - 17:00
Global energy demands (especially by China & India) and increased oil price have initiated the search for all energy sources such as oil, gas, coal, nuclear, bio-fuels, solar etc. This has resulted in new field developments, projects and construction activities across the globe to the extent that some remote areas such as the North Pole are under focus for future energy supplies.
The fast pace of oil & gas developments and the desire to keep costs low have introduced new challenges such as erosion of safety culture in large construction industries and coal mines, long term environmental impacts due to quick-win strategy, not involving the public in the development concepts. In addition, there is the HSE impact on neighboring communities and stakeholders and conflicting interests of emission control strategy (reduce your carbon footprint) and industries (increase production to supply new demand).
