Development of Marginal Offshore Fields

21- 24 April 2008
Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia

High world energy demand is pushing oil prices to unprecedented heights, and putting pressure on the industry to produce more reserves. Threshold levels have come down for what was once considered marginal fields. High oil prices, however, bring new challenges including

  • Rising commodity prices pushing development costs higher
  • Increased environmental concerns pushing higher standards
  • Resource constraints – engineers, fabrication yards, drilling rigs and
    construction barges

Past issues for the development of marginal fields have always been

  • Complex geology
  • Challenging drilling environments
  • Infrastructure constraints
  • Data acquisition and the value of information and technology

The commercialisation of marginal fields needs to take a broader look, not only at innovative technology solutions, but also for innovative means of exploiting the entire supply chain and human capital. This Applied Technology Workshop, ATW, will provide a forum to discuss these issues and challenges using current thinking, industry trends, and available technology.

Workshop Objectives and Deliverables

This comprehensive and focused 2½ day workshop will allow participants to:

  • Discuss the latest approaches in dealing with the development of marginal offshore fields
  • Review the latest technical advances associated with the development of offshore fields
  • Discuss the latest approaches to supply chain management in developing offshore fields
  • Discuss the latest approaches to solving the human capital issues
  • Enhance individual skills and awareness in the development of marginal fields
  • Network with participants from other companies and countries
  • Exchange ideas with fellow practitioners through group problem solving sessions

The aim is to conduct a workshop involving a balance of regional and international experts to discuss the above topics, to exchange ideas, and generally to find appropriate solutions for economic oil recovery from marginal fields.

This is a limited attendance meeting designed for asset managers, engineers, geoscientists, economists and supply chain management concerned with the development of marginal fields. The workshop is expected to attract a broad cross section of industry professionals involved in all aspects of marginal field development.
