Operators drilling in uncertain environments such as deep water can receive assistance from a variety of emerging technologies. Real-time improved measurements of Logging While Drilling (LWD) sonic technology embedded with improved drill pipe telemetry increase the quantity and speed of downhole data measurement, providing a potential replacement for wireline applications. This has allowed for more complex analysis and broader applications, which put emphasis on the need for accurate real-time data streams. The newest generation of LWD tools provide timely analysis while assisting with pore pressure prediction, gas influx detection, borehole stability measurement, and drilling optimization. Sonic tools can collect data needed to determine accurately well placement in the seismic sections, and have the added benefit of creating direct ties between downhole and seismic measurements.
This two day SPE/AAPG joint workshop will cross traditional borders, bringing together drilling engineers, petro-physicists, geophysicists, and geologists to explore sonic data collection and usage. Discussions will center on hardware development, measurement physics, process algorithms, and the application potential of sonic data collection tools.
