PLENARY III
ROADMAP TO THE FUTURE:  PEOPLE AND PROCESSES

Moderators: Ford Brett, President - Petroskills
Oil and Gas Consultants International

The growth in drilling activity and rig demand has exploded during the past three years. In the next three years, more than 120 new offshore rigs will join the drilling fleet with average personnel requirements of around 200 to operate and support each rig. The estimate for new land rig builds worldwide in 2007 was around 750. Compounding the personnel issue is the growth (and replacement) plans for drilling contractors, service companies, and operators.  Demand for people stands at its highest level in more than a quarter of a century. Meanwhile, our most experienced people are crossing the threshold to retirement. The experienced "knowledge gurus" are often promoted to management and mentor positions as our employee base grows, with an often adverse affect on front line efficiency, as the average experience level drops.

How can we accelerate the competency curve for the thousands of new hires that will join our ranks to meet demand predictions? What processes and methods will we evolve to sustain growth to 2015? Will the recruitment sources and techniques of today be the same for tomorrow?

Panelists: Ross Richardson, Director, HR, HSEQ and Training, KCA Deutag
Didier Charreton, Vice President Human Resources - BHI Corporate, Baker Hughes
Walter A. F. Simpson, General Manager, Operations and Well Engineering, BG Group
