Over time offshore developments have moved toward more and more challenging resources that are in deeper water, contain more viscous oil, and often have poorer quality resource. At the same time, there is a strong desire to improve recovery from these increasingly challenging reservoirs. Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods, which go beyond primary recovery and waterflooding, are being considered to improve recovery. Offshore application of enhanced recovery methods, however, poses a number of challenges. These include facilities design, space allocation and installation, the lead time required for project implementation, delivery of supplies and injectants to the offshore wellhead, and finally, economic viability. This forum will look to the future of EOR in the offshore and identify possible paths to success.
