PANEL 01: SENSITIVE ENVIRONMENTS

Session Chairpersons: Elizabeth M. Rogers, BP
John Aronson, AATA International

How can our industry assess and protect the local biodiversity or mitigate its impact when developing its activities in sensitive environments? It took several years to raise awareness within the industry on biodiversity issues and build a sound dialogue with stakeholders. We have now reached a point where biodiversity is considered a major component of new projects in sensitive areas. The panel will look at a few recent cases—from Azerbaijan to Peru—with a view to identifying the main challenges taken up and infer key factors to success.

Special Panel Session: Carbon Capture and Storage: How to make a Dream Come True

Session Chairpersons: Emmanuel Garland, Total
Claudia Gnecco, BP

Panel Description

Carbon Capture and Storage is by far the most challenging emerging issue for the energy industry. Experts and society at large see it as one of the most promising techniques to reduce CO2 emissions in the near future. At the same time questions about its reliability to maintain the CO2 stored for the long term emerge. The E&P industry will play a key role in the development of the technique.
Many studies have been conducted during the last decade, and several pilot units have been built or are to be built in the coming years. But not only the technique itself has still to be developed to meet the requirements, stakeholders want to know about its reliability. Its costs are such that it will remain uneconomic unless some changes in the fiscal and regulatory regimes occur.
This Special Session will provide a state-of-the art of the technique (from an E&P standpoint), and address the legal and business challenges, in order to make the technique an effective response to CO2 emissions.

PANEL 03: CATASTROPHIC INCIDENTS: LEARNING FROM THE PAST TO PREVENT IN THE FUTURE

Moderators: Don Jacobsen, Shell International
Eamonn Naughton, BP

Preventing catastrophic incidents in an oil and gas facility requires management commitment and leadership, continuous vigilance and a sustained commitment to disciplined systems, and processes that ensure a robust approach to risk management and operations integrity. Too often, history has demonstrated that the passing of time without a process mishap can lead to complacency and a loss of an appreciation for the dangers and risks involved with our operations. It is important to identify the key roles that thoughtful engineering, operations integrity management systems, the evaluation of the potential consequences from near misses, and other controls have in ensuring reliable, safe, and environmentally responsible operations. This panel discussion aims to provide insight into how to avoid the common pitfalls that have lead to catastrophic incidents in the past.
