Short Course

The programme committee is offering a short course to be held on 20 April, before the SPE EOR Conference at Oil & Gas West Asia. The course will be held at the Golden Tulip Hotel, Muscat.

Characterisation and Modelling of Waterflood Performance and Remaining Oil Distributions in Carbonate Reservoirs: A Prerequisite for EOR

Who should attend

  • Petroleum reservoir engineers with a minimum of 2 years of industry or related R&D experience
  • All other engineers
  • Petrophysicists and geologists with some experience in reservoir engineering and/or integrated field studies

Course description

Participants will learn the fundamental principles of flow in porous media, special core analysis with a focus on oil recovery from carbonates. This course will focus on improving the characterisation and modelling of heterogeneous, mixed to oil-wet carbonate reservoirs to enable more accurate prediction of waterflooding performance and remaining oil saturation distribution. The course also discusses implications of accurate assessment of waterflood remaining oil distribution in the design and optimisation of subsequent EOR processes.

Instructors

  • Shehadeh Masalmeh, Shell Technology Oman
  • Xu Dong Jing, Shell Technology Oman

Topics covered

  • Reviewing Basic Concepts
  • Understanding Wettability, Capillarity, and Relative Permeability
  • Defining Residual Oil Saturation vs. Remaining Oil Saturation
  • Focusing on Carbonates
  • Predicting Waterflood Performance and Implications for EOR
  • Analysing Oil Recovery From Capillary Transition Zones
  • Exploring Upscaling in Heterogeneous Carbonates
  • Discussing Field Examples From the Middle East Region

Registration deadline is 13 April 2008
