Monday, 21 April

0900 - 0930

Opening Ceremony

Key dignitaries and members of local and regional ministries are invited to officiate an Opening Ceremony.

0930 – 1030

Executive Plenary Session: EOR Drivers and Challenges

Moderators: Saif Al Hinai, Petroleum Development Oman, and Mike Townshend, BP

Confirmed Speakers: John Malcolm, Managing Director, Petroleum Development Oman

Four national oil companies from the Middle East region are invited to give their perspective and share their thoughts on the key drivers and challenges of enhanced oil recovery (EOR).

1030 – 1200 Exhibit Tour
1200 – 1330 Lunch
1330 – 1630

Session 1: EOR: Past, Present, and Future

Session Chairpersons: Ali Al Gheithy, Petroleum Development Oman, and Suleiman Al Zakwani, Oman Oil

Speakers

  • Ali Al Muallem, Saudi Aramco
  • Marc Durandeau, Total
  • M. Rafiqul Islam , Dalhousie University (Halifax, Canada)
  • Willem Schulte, Shell

Tuesday, 22 April

0800 – 1000

Session 2: Chemical EOR

Session Chairpersons: Xu Dong Jing, Shell Technology Oman, and Arafat Al Yafei, ADNOC

Speakers

  • Martin Stoll, Shell
  • Mohamed Aoudia, Sultan Qaboos University
  • Said Al Harthy, Petroleum Development Oman
  • Tor Austad, Stravanger University

This session will cover recent technical advances and field applications in chemical enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The topics to be addressed include polymer, alkaline-surfactant-polymer, and other emerging chemical EOR processes (e.g., for carbonates). The session speakers will include leading academics and industry representatives from the region and globally who are currently pursuing chemical EOR.

1030 – 1230

Session 3: Thermal EOR

Session Chairpersons: Ali Al Gheithy, Petroleum Development Oman, and Suleiman Al Zakwani, Oman Oil

Speakers

  • Dave Brooks, Shell
  • Michiel Van Rijen, Petroleum Development Oman
  • Siddartha Sur, ONGC India

This session will cover key aspects of thermal enhanced oil recovery techniques including steam flooding, huff-and-puff, and steam-assisted gas-oil-gravity drainage in heavy and light reservoirs and in-situ combustion. Several pilots and case studies, as well as examples of the latest technical advances from Sultanate of Oman and globally, will be presented and discussed.

1400 – 1600

Session 4: Gas and CO2 Challenges

Session Chairpersons: Abdulaziz Al Kaabi, Saudi Aramco, and Bader Al Badi, ADMA-OPCO

Speakers

  • Shahin Negahban, Adco
  • Shawket Ghedan, The Petroleum Institute
  • Sunil Kokal, Saudi Aramco
  • Tara La Force, Imperial College

The session will cover the challenges and latest technologies related to EOR using gas injection (e.g., hydrocarbon gas and carbon dioxide). Potential and added value of such techniques for enhancing recovery from regional oil fields will be emphasized. The session will attract invited industry experts, academicians, and researchers to discuss and debate important issues related to the application of gas injection for EOR, such as

  • Overview of gas injection technology
  • Challenges and technology gaps
  • Field and laboratory requirements
  • Screening for gas injection application
  • Successful projects/pilots
  • Way forward and new trends in gas injection

Wednesday, 23 April

0800 – 1000

Session 5: Locating Remaining Oil: Reservoir Surveillance and Monitoring for EOR

Session Chairpersons: John Edwards, Schlumberger, and Mahmoud Al Hashimi, Halliburton

Speakers

  • Alberto Marsala, Saudi Aramco
  • David Ottesen, Ziebel
  • Raghu Ramamoorthy, Schlumberger
  • Shehadeh Masalme, Shell Technology Oman

Taking advantage of the physical property changes inherent in the EOR process, a variety of tools now exist, or are under development, to monitor EOR. This session will examine the method and case histories of both deep reading and near-wellbore technologies for EOR candidate selection and EOR reservoir surveillance.

1030 – 1230

Session 6: Capability of Simulators and the Geomechanics of EOR

Session Chairpersons: Arafat Al Yafei, Adnoc, and Mazen Kanji, Saudi Aramco

Speakers

  • Jorge Pita, Saudi Aramco
  • Nick Koutsabeloulis, Schlumberger

This session on simulation will discuss the capabilities of industrial software in simulating EOR techniques, with a focus on chemical and thermal processes. It will also highlight the experiences of international oil companies in EOR simulation. We will be looking for answers to questions like

  • What are the main difficulties in simulating chemical and thermal processes?
  • What is the precision of EOR simulations is uncertainty within the range of incremental oil?
  • Where and how can we improve the capabilities of EOR simulation software?
  • Can we evaluate the base case and EOR case using the same software with the same precision?
  • What are the criteria for choosing the proper software?
