Because of the coal depositional process and the nature of gas storage and transport mechanisms, a large percentage of coalbed methane (CBM) exists in low-permeability, or tight, coals. Horizontal drilling and enhanced CBM techniques have been successful in recovering gas from tight coals, but with limited commercial success so far. Better understanding of coal geology and geomechanics will lead to identification of sweet spots that can be successfully developed. Advancements in horizontal drilling technology and potentially enhanced CBM technology will reduce development costs and facilitate commercial development. Research and development is required to advance these technologies.

SPE has formed a Technical Section to give members the opportunity to focus on Carbon Dioxide Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS), an area of interest for petroleum engineers worldwide. Industry interest in CCUS as a way to reduce emissions and for sequestering or storing carbon dioxide, has increased over the past decade. In response, SPE has stepped up programming in this area.
Carbon dioxide capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) involves capturing CO2 emissions from large point sources such as power plants and either reutilizing or storing the emissions to keep them from entering the atmosphere.
Expanded Career Opportunities for Petroleum EngineersPossessing the know-how for evaluation, selection, and monitoring of underground storage sites garnered through decades of experience in the fields of CO2-enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and gas storage operations, the E&P segment of the oil and gas industry is anticipated to play a major role in the advancement of CCUS including broader application of CO2-EOR.
Moreover, lessons learned in the ongoing commercial activities within the oil and gas disciplines of underground gas storage and CO2-EOR are directly transferrable to CCUS, thus expanding career opportunities for petroleum engineers.

The SPE Board of Directors approved the 2014 International Award recipients at their recent meeting in Cartagena, Colombia. Seventeen international award committees recommended these winners to the board because of their outstanding and significant technical, professional, and service contributions to SPE and the petroleum industry. SPE President Jeff Spath will present the awards to the winners in October at the SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
The oil and gas E&P industry faces big challenges as it rises to meet the world’s growing energy needs. And we don’t have all the answers. For that reason, SPE is holding a Research & Development Competition specifically to encourage researchers from the basic sciences and other engineering disciplines to engage in our six Grand Challenges.
The competition is open to academia, research institutes and organizations, companies, and individual investigators. Submissions for the competition are being accepted online through 1 June 2014.

In November 2010 the Texas Heart Institute contacted Cameron asking if they would participate with them from an engineering standpoint in the design and development of the next generation total artificial heart. The doctors contacted Cameron based on the fact that they have significant expertise in the design of all kinds of pumps and compressors, plus the fact that Cameron is going to be around to support it. Cameron agreed to take this on and we put together the engineering team that exists today. The engineers work on this on a voluntary basis.
