Welcome to the SPE’s Drilling discipline page, a portal to all SPE activities and events of interest to the drilling community.
Since the introduction of Technical Directors in 2001, Drilling and Completions has been a single technical discipline, represented on the Board by a single Technical Director. With the increasing complexity of completions operations and technologies, drilling and completions have come to be regarded by the industry as distinct, albeit closely linked, disciplines. This has been recognized by the SPE for some time with separate awards for Drilling Engineering and for Completions Optimization and Technology.
At their March 2016 meeting, the SPE Board approved the creation of a new Completions technical discipline. They believe the interests of members from the drilling and completions communities will be better served if each has a separate technical discipline and Technical Director. This significant step emphasizes the importance of both drilling and completions engineering to SPE and to our industry. It strengthens the representation of the drilling and completions communities on the Board, and allows more focused and effective communications between the Technical Directors and the communities they represent. I believe it’s important that SPE provides the support drilling professionals need to drill every well safely, efficiently, and with minimized environmental impact. Capability development and knowledge transfer are two key elements of SPE’s strategy.
SPE’s ever-growing catalogue of training courses, our competency matrices and the recently introduced competency management tool support capability development. So too do the many webinars we stage, all of which are now accessible for on-demand replay whenever convenient.
Many of SPE’s knowledge transfer tools are well established – OnePetro, SPE Drilling and Completion journal, textbooks, regional and global conferences, forums and workshops, SPE Connect, PetroWiki, and the webinar series.
To me it’s no surprise that the Drilling online community has become a particularly lively forum for discussion of drilling related matters, technical and operational challenges. Special thanks to all members who share experience and insight and who stimulate thought and discussion with their fellow SPE members through this community.
PetroWiki has been a great success as a knowledge source, with nearly 670,000 unique users in the first quarter of 2016. But it could be even better with more and more frequent updates and new material additions. The next time you give a technical presentation, post an item on SPE Connect, or answer a colleague’s technical question, ask yourself “is that something which should be in PetroWiki?” And if the answer is yes, then please do think about contributing it. Your fellow SPE members will thank you for it.
The SPE is currently working to exploit the latest content management technologies to the full, to integrate our various knowledge repositories and to personalize for each member the delivery of the information and knowledge they want and need.

It’s been my honour and privilege to serve as the SPE’s Technical Director for Drilling and Completions since September 2013. A lot has changed since then. Our industry has experienced what may well be its most significant and longest lasting downturn in well construction activity.
