Welcome to the spe.org Technical Discipline page for SPE’s newest discipline: Completions! SPE is pleased to provide this new discipline option for its members.
SPE’s Board of Directors has created a new “Completions” technical discipline, concluding that the interests of SPE professional members from the drilling, completions, and production and operations communities would be best served if Completions became a separate technical discipline.
Currently, Completions Engineering is regarded by the industry as a separate discipline in its own right, distinct from drilling, because of the increasing complexity of completions technologies and operations. In addition, the Production and Operations discipline definition includes some topics that are now often thought of as falling under the category of Completions Engineering, which has resulted in ambiguity about whether some activities should be classified as Drilling and Completions or Production and Operations. Drilling and Completions is the largest SPE technical discipline, comprising more than 25 percent of SPE’s professional members.
With the addition of Completions, SPE’s seventh technical discipline, changes will be seen across all of SPE’s programs and member benefits. Be on the lookout for notifications from SPE that will allow you to update your member profile and if applicable, select your new preferred technical discipline.
The new Completions discipline includes the following major technical categories:
- Completion Selection and Design
- Completion Installation and Operations
- Well Monitoring Systems/Intelligent Wells
- Sand Control
- Hydraulic Fracturing
- Completion Fluids
- Completions Evaluation
- Well integrity
- Fundamental Research in Well Completions
This webpage is your portal for the new SPE Completions community. For those of you whose primary or secondary technical discipline is Completions, I encourage you to log into your SPE member account and update your technical discipline preference accordingly. Also, please check this page frequently, as we will be updating it regularly with new information regarding the Completions discipline.
SPE, the SPE Board of Directors, and I all hope this new addition to the SPE technical disciplines family will help meet your interests and position SPE’s technical structure for many years to come.
If you have any questions or concerns about this new update or how SPE can better serve the Completions community, please contact me.

Many in the oil and gas industry have been affected by the downturn and have found a new job or will find employment in the future. Not only will this presentation satisfy an ethics PDH, it will also be a great opportunity to learn of the many legal obligations employees need to be aware of during transition.
Please join us on 17 May at 1200 Central Time to hear more on this topic.
Applications are open for SPE Faculty Enhancement Travel Grants. If you are a university faculty member looking for financial support to attend SPE conferences, workshops, and forums apply online today.
We all recognize and appreciate the challenges of the present downturn, especially the effects on field operations, development planning, and reservoir management. However, the workloads in reservoir engineering and formation evaluation have never been higher. SPE has targeted the same level of technical standards at its conferences and workshops, and there are many venues available for those seeking exposure and guidance for Reservoir Description and Dynamics.
For guidance, please see:
I encourage you to take advantage of opportunities to network and collaborate.
As always, my “virtual door” is always open if I can be of assistance/guidance in matters related to Reservoir Description and Dynamics.
Is entrepreneurship right for you? This will be the topic of discussion for Roger Hite’s live webinar on 26 May at 0830 Central Time.
No matter what we call our Digital Oil Fields — intelligent, smart, integrated — the ultimate fact is that those fields are data-driven oilfields that are interconnected in between and integrated with business networks and systems. We do understand that there is no fully secure system on this earth, however we can still have an advanced level of robust cyber security controls that can be injected during the design of the digital oil field that makes it robust against the emerging cyber threats.
