Deliverables and Expectations

Members write PE exam items for the NCEES problem bank, work within a technical discipline subcommittee, participate in cross discipline review of problems, and work with other committee members to compile problems for the next exam.

Qualifications and Experience

  • All committee members must be U.S. licensed by exam. Waivers are granted to content experts that are state licensed by experience.
  • The committee maintains a balance of members assigned to technology sub-disciplines (reservoir, drilling, and production operations).

Expected Time Commitment

The committee conducts 3 2-day meetings in January, May, and October of each year. Additionally, members are required to spend, on average, 10 to 20 hours writing exam problems outside of the committee meeting.

About the committee

The Subcommittee works with the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) and with state boards of engineering registration to facilitate the registration of interested petroleum engineers. The primary function of the committee Chair is to coordinate committee activities and act as the Society's liaison representative with state engineering boards. The Subcommittee is responsible for the preparation and scoring of the examinations furnished to the NCEES for use by state boards. Also, the Subcommittee monitors activities in the areas of registration, licensure, and/or certification and advises the Board of any significant development that might occur.

The Subcommittee is composed of twenty-one members, with seven members appointed each year by the President-elect for 4-year terms.

  • Terms of office expire in September/October of year indicated in the Subcommittee listing.
  • The Chair and Vice-Chair are appointed annually by the President-elect for a one-year term and normally are selected from among the members beginning the third and second years of their terms, respectively.
  • Members of the SPE Engineering Registration Committee must be registered professional engineers.
  • The immediate past Chair of the Subcommittee and the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Exam Liaison serve as members ex-officio.
  • Outgoing Subcommittee members including ex-officio committee members who have developed certain expertise in committee activities for which the Subcommittee has current need may be invited to continue their committee service for an additional year as members ex-officio.
