Members write PE exam items for the NCEES problem bank, work within a technical discipline subcommittee, participate in cross discipline review of problems, and work with other committee members to compile problems for the next exam.
The committee conducts 3 2-day meetings in January, May, and October of each year. Additionally, members are required to spend, on average, 10 to 20 hours writing exam problems outside of the committee meeting.
The Subcommittee works with the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) and with state boards of engineering registration to facilitate the registration of interested petroleum engineers. The primary function of the committee Chair is to coordinate committee activities and act as the Society's liaison representative with state engineering boards. The Subcommittee is responsible for the preparation and scoring of the examinations furnished to the NCEES for use by state boards. Also, the Subcommittee monitors activities in the areas of registration, licensure, and/or certification and advises the Board of any significant development that might occur.
The Subcommittee is composed of twenty-one members, with seven members appointed each year by the President-elect for 4-year terms.
