E&P Software Toolbox = Increased Efficiency + Cost Savings

SPE has partnered with Petris Technology Inc. to bring the E&P Software Toolbox to SPE.org. Designed to give easy access to software applications that can help you and your employees be more productive, the E&P Software Toolbox contains many different types of tools so that you can choose the one that is appropriate for the task at hand.

E&P Software Toolbox is an Application Service Provider (ASP) offering online access to powerful engineering applications on a short-term or as-needed basis, anywhere in the world. An ASP offers significant savings over the comparable cost of purchasing and maintaining the software in-house. One E&P company estimates that for a particular reservoir engineering application, it saved over $325/hour of usage by taking advantage of an ASP. An ASP also makes it easy for staff in different locations to work with the same program and database.

E&P Software Toolbox provides a growing array of software to help engineers do their work and be more efficient:

More than 50 different applications are currently available, and the number continues to grow.

Benefits of Using E&P Software Toolbox

  • Gain access to an application for a short-term project without purchasing the software
  • Opportunity to "try" software for its suitability to your situation before you commit to purchase
  • Make a software application available to employees in many locations without having to install it on individual computers
  • Shortened decision cycle for gaining access versus in-house purchase decisions
  • Reduce in-house expenditures on software, hardware, maintenance, data storage, and customer support
  • Eliminate need for large capital expenditures to purchase software
  • Add applications or users as needed to meet changing business requirements.

A recent study by the U.S. Department of Commerce estimated that the cost of software licensing is only 30% of the total cost of ownership. The total cost of software ownership also includes maintenance fees, training, hardware, end-user support, and many less tangible costs. Use of software through an ASP can avoid these additional costs, resulting in savings of up to 70%.
