Frequently Asked Questions

Q: As a judge (or Regional/Technical Director) of an award committee, can I nominate a candidate for an award, or provide a letter of support for a candidate?
A: Nominations: Chairs, ex-officio members and committee members should not nominate candidates for the award in which they are judging. If they have nominated a candidate, they should recuse themself from the committee. Rather than nominating, we recommend they find an alternate nominator to nominate any deserving candidates.

Letters of Support: We strongly advise refraining from writing letters of support for any candidate in the running for the award in which you will be judging. Given our three-year candidate pool, we realize that a committee member may have provided a letter of support in a prior year for a nomination still ‘in the running’. If this is the case, it is acceptable. We simply ask that you remain neutral and open-minded during deliberations and when judging.

Q. Can committee members advocate for a candidate?
A. We realize that many committee members are familiar with candidates in any given candidate pool. Judges may speak to their knowledge of a particular candidate’s accomplishments during deliberations; however, they must refrain from forcing the candidate on the committee. They must remain neutral and open-minded to the accomplishments of all candidates. Ex-Officios should refrain from advocating for any candidate.

Q: Should judges only consider items within the nomination packet, or can we research using public platforms?
A: Judges may research candidates using public platforms; however, this is not required. If a judge does choose to utilize public platforms, he/she should be consistent and research each candidate to remain consistent and fair.
