  • China National Offshore Oil Company (CNOOC) has made a natural gas discovery at its deepwater Lingshui 25-1 well, northeast of Ledong sag in the South China Sea’s Qiongdongnan basin, where the average water depth is 980 m. The well was drilled to a depth of 4000 m and encountered 73 m of oil and gas pay. During a test, the well produced approximately 35 MMcf/D of natural gas and 395 BOPD. CNOOC holds full operated interest in the license.

  • The Martlet North-1 exploration well, which is located on the western flank of South Australia’s Cooper basin, encountered oil shows in its primary target, the Namur Sandstone. Logs indicated the presence of 3.2 m of vertical net pay. Martlet also encountered oil in its secondary target, the Birkhead formation. The well has been cased and suspended as a future producer. Senex Energy (60%) is the operator with partner Beach Energy (40%).

  • Australia Pacific LNG has received its first gas from coal seam gas fields in the Surat basin. The gas is being carried to its liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility on Curtis Island, near Gladstone, Queensland, by a 530-km high-pressure gas pipeline, which was recently commissioned. With the arrival of gas, Australia Pacific can begin commissioning power generator facilities on the island. The company expects to deliver its first LNG in the middle of the year.

  • Buru Energy has started drilling at its Sunbeam 1 well in Permit EP 129, 85 km southeast of Derby, Western Australia. It plans to drill the well to a total depth of 1200 m and is targeting conventional oil reservoirs in the early Permian-aged Grant formation. The target is thought to contain channel sand reservoir intervals enclosed by argillaceous siltstone. Buru (100%) is the operator of the permit.

  • Latin America-Caribbean

  • Canancol Energy’s Clarinete 1 well, located in Colombia’s VIM 5 exploration and production contract, produced a final gross rate of 20.6 MMcf/D of dry gas during the first of two production tests. The tests were performed over two separate intervals in the Cienaga de Oro sandstone reservoir. The company plans to perforate selected intervals in the upper reservoir and perform a second flow test. Canancol is the operator and holds 100% interest in the block.

  • Middle East-North Africa

  • A well drilled from TAQA Atrush’s AT-1 pad in Iraq showed production rates as high as 9,059 B/D of 27 °API to 28 °API gravity oil, when three drillstem tests were conducted in a Jurassic-aged reservoir. Downhole and surface samples were taken for oil assay studies. TAQA (39.9%) is the operator with partners Kurdistan Regional Government (25%), ShaMaran Petroleum (20.1%), and Marathon Oil (15%).

  • The Statoil-operated Oseberg Delta 2 project in the Norwegian North Sea has started producing oil and gas. The project is tied back to the Oesberg Field Centre and has been developed using two subsea templates with the capacity for eight wells. Oesberg Delta 2 is using enhanced recovery techniques such as gas injection to extend the life of the aging Oesberg field, which is more than 20 years old. The project is a joint venture between Statoil (49.3%), Petoro (33.6%), Total (14.7%), and ConocoPhillips (2.4%).

  • Lundin Petroleum’s wholly owned subsidiary Lundin Norway spudded the 16/1-24 exploration well in the Gemini Prospect (PL338C) offshore Norway, 10 km southwest of the Edvard Grieg field. The well’s main objective is to test the reservoir properties and hydrocarbon potential of Lower Paleocene-aged sandstones of the Ty formation. The planned total depth is approximately 2192 m below mean sea level, and the well will be drilled using the semisubmersible rig Island Innovator. Drilling is expected to take approximately 40 days. Lundin (80%) is the operator with partner OMV Norge(20%).

  • Dana Petroleum finished drilling its Lille John-2 appraisal well, a sidetrack in the Lille John oil field, License 12/06, in the Danish North Sea. The well confirmed the presence of sweet, light oil in a Late Miocene sandstone interval. A production test showed a maximum flowrate of 1,400 B/D of 34 °API to 35 °API gravity oil with no sand or H2S. Dana (40%) is the operator with PA Resources (24%),& Nordsøfonden (20%), Danoil Exploration(8%), and Spyker Energy (8%).

  • Europa Oil & Gas commenced drilling operations at the Kiln Lane-1 well in northern England’s PEDL181 permit, 25 km east of its Crosby Warren field. The well will be drilled as a straight hole to a total depth of approximately 2500 m. The Kiln Lane prospect contains a robust structural closure defined on 3D seismic data, and the well has been designed to intersect a number of prospective Upper Carboniferous-aged sandstone reservoirs near the crest of the structure. Europa (50%) operates the permit with partners Egdon Resources (25%) and Celtique Energie Petroleum (25%).

  • South, Central and East Europe

  • Palomar Resources has discovered likely commercial quantities of natural gas in its Rawicz-12 appraisal well at the Rawicz concession in southwestern Poland. The well flowed 4.1 MMscf/D of gas through a fixed 80/64-in. choke at a wellhead pressure of 205 psig. The gas produced during the tests contained no water or H2S vapors and was approximately 70% methane. Palomar (65%) is the operator with partner San Leon Energy (35%).

  • Operators in North Dakota’s Bakken Shale have rolled back drilling efforts substantially, retreating from non-core areas, according to Reuters. The number of rigs operating outside core areas has fallen from 17 to 6 since December. The state’s Department of Mineral Resources reported that North Dakota’s total rig count has now fallen below the threshold of “at least 130 rigs” required to keep production steady at the current rate of approximately 1.2 million BOPD.
