SPE: Weathering the Downturn
When oil prices began to fall rapidly in the last half of 2014, the impact was quickly felt in all of SPE’s programs. Our magazines were affected first by a reduction in advertising as companies reduced their marketing budgets.
With New Rig Software, Automated Drilling is Easier To Embrace
A new process system compatible with all types of drilling rigs is opening the door to wider adoption of drilling automation in North America’s shale sector.
Can Austin Chalk Expansion Lead to Revival?
There is increasing interest in drilling the Austin Chalk formation, with hopes that the latest unconventional development methods can deliver a boom in a play that has seen several over a 90-year history.
Getting More From Fracturing With Diversion
Significant production gains are being made with hydraulicly fractured wells using diversion to stimulate a higher percentage of the perforations.
Permian, Bakken Operators Face Produced Water Challenges
As oil prices recover from the low point of the downturn, operators in the Permian and the Bakken are tackling water management issues.

With New Advance, Natural Gas Filtering Technology Moves Closer to Commercial Reality
A new material under development is highly effective at sieving carbon dioxide from natural gas streams and is also cheap and easy to make, according to researchers.
US Gulf of Mexico Hits Record Production
New figures show that the facilities working in the Gulf of Mexico achieved higher crude output in 2016 than at any other period.
Foamer Developed To Help Corrosion, Scale Inhibition
A look at the challenges in creating a foamer with corrosion and scale inhibition properties for application in wet-gas production.
University Consortium Prepares for Spike in Decommissioning
A new university-led consortium aims to bring together industry and academia to help operators efficiently orchestrate the final days of deepwater developments.
Senior Adviser, Hess Corporation
This year’s papers provide examples of efficiencies that have been brought about in coiled-tubing operations. The papers demonstrate how problem-solving techniques have been applied to improve such aspects as on-site processes, fit-for-purpose equipment, and more-effective treatment placement.
Petroleum Engineering Consultant, Saudi Aramco
Tight formations are candidates for hydraulic fracturing as the default. However, the solubility of carbonate by various chemicals provides opportunities to extend the well drainage radius effectively without the intensive equipment, material, and infrastructure demand of hydraulic fracturing.

Climate Change and SPE
Last year, SPE created a task force to study the topic of climate change and to determine if a public position statement should be created. After a year-long review, it recommended that we not develop a statement on climate change, which was accepted by the SPE Board of Directors in March.
Why has this become a common treatment for stimulating the productivity of oil and gas wells?
PetroWiki is a free resource from SPE to answer many basic petroleum engineering and operational questions. SPE professional members can contribute their expertise through updating or adding to PetroWiki content.
