National Oilwell Varco (NOV) has released the Patriot fluid end, a new well-service pump fluid end designed to maximize durability, facilitate ease of maintenance, and lower total cost of ownership. Advanced geometry exhibits peak stresses within 5% of a Y-Block design with the ease of maintenance of a valve-over-valve design. Additionally, the new fluid end provides a 40% reduction in bore-intersection stress and a 26% increase in flow area around suction and discharge valves, which reduces cavitation and fluid-end washouts. Improved maintenance features include an easy-to-install two-piece valve retainer, which optimizes line of sight during installation; a wing-style gauge connection retainer that eliminates the cheater bar, which significantly increases safety and reduces the likelihood of component damage; and a discharge flange design, which allows full access for impact and torque wrenches. The Patriot fluid end incorporates NOV’s Blue Thunder well-service valves. The valves employ a proprietary urethane insert to provide improved wear characteristics, and a forged high-strength steel unibody allows greater flow area. The valve, which is compatible with most frac pump fluid ends, is designed to handle even the highest amount of solids content and provides users with a lifespan that is up to three times greater than comparable offerings. The combination of Patriot fluid end and Blue Thunder service valves reduces downtime, decreases cost, and improves performance in even the most challenging shale applications.
