Southwest Electronic Energy completed 10,000-psi pressure testing of the SeaSafe smart battery module, developed for subsea vehicles and deepwater oil and gas infrastructure. The test conducted in a third-party test laboratory’s 30-in. hyperbaric chamber included nine complete pressure cycles between 0 psi and 10,000 psi, while continuously performing battery charge and discharge. The company said that performance at 10,000 psi enables a safe operating sea depth of 6000 m plus margin. The lithium ion-based modules are autonomous battery building blocks, each with a battery management system. The pressure test was preceded by an external shorts test, which validated that the module automatically shuts off safely for currents in excess of 90A. Modules of 29V or 24V can be connected in series for targeted system voltage or parallel for targeted amp‑hr capacity.
