DIAB International has designed an alternative to the insulated steel enclosures typically used for noise reduction around working equipment such as pumps, motors, and machinery on offshore platforms. A steel enclosure can weigh more than 20,000 lbs. A noise enclosure made of composite material weighs in at half that weight, the company said. The enclosure combines a Divinycell P core at a thickness that provides the required panel strength and sound insulation with fiberglass laminate skins made with a fire-retardant resin. To surround the equipment, custom-sized panels are bolted together and mounted to the platform floor in a steel frame. The company reported noise reductions from 114 dB inside an enclosure to below 70 dB outside of the enclosure.
