Antiscalant

BWA Additives’ Flocon 885, a biodegradable antiscalant, controls deposition of inorganic scale-forming salts on reverse osmosis membrane surfaces in seawater and fresh water. Compatible with major brand membranes, the product is phosphorus- and nitrogen-free and has international potable water approvals. The company said Flocon provides an option to offshore producers who typically use phosphonate-based antiscalants to clean membrane desulfination units. Starting in 2015, the use of chemicals, such as certain phosphonates, in applications in which there is discharge to seawater will be limited by the United Kingdom’s Centre for Environment, Fisheries, and Aquaculture Science because of their potential for environmental effects, such as toxicity to aquatic organisms, bioaccumulation, and biodegradation.
