Course Description

This course probes well integrity questions with analytical models embedded in fluid flow and heat transfer principles. Attendees will learn the principles of analytical tools that enable us to diagnose and seek remediation of wellbore safety issues.

Why Attend

This one-day training course emphasizes fundamental understanding of fluid- and heat-flow principles leading to improved production operation practices. For example, tubular design demands valid input of both static and dynamic temperature gradients. Beyond those necessary parameters, the input of accurate flowing fluid temperature due to Joule-Thompson effect becomes equally important. Sustaining high production rates for prolonged periods necessitate addressing safety issues about casing integrity. To that end, both APB and SCP analyses are discussed. Similar principles may be used to diagnose integrity of gas-lift valves.

We also discuss how relatively simplified modeling approach may be taken to assess the maximum discharge that occurs in uncontrolled gas or oil well.

Instructor

Shah Kabir is an adjunct member of the faculty at U. of Houston and proprietor of CS Kabir Consulting. His experience spans more than 40 years in the areas of transient-pressure testing, fluid and heat-flow modeling in wellbores, and reservoir engineering. He has published over 130 peer-review articles, coauthored the 2002 SPE book Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer in Wellbores and contributed to the 2009 SPE Monograph Transient Well Testing. Kabir has served on various SPE committees, including the editorial review committees for SPE Production & Facilities, SPE Reservoir Evaluation & Engineering, and SPE Journal. He was a 2006–07 SPE Distinguished Lecturer, received the 2010 Reservoir Description and Dynamics Award, and the SPE/AIME Honorary Membership Award in 2016. Kabir holds a master’s degree from the University of Calgary.
