Principles and Application of SCAL Data for Heavy Oil Reservoirs
The impact of Special Core Analysis, SCAL, data on the way fluids are distributed in conventional reservoirs, their hydrocarbons initially in place as well as its subsequent estimation of reserves are well researched, under different conditions of depletion, secondary and tertiary EOR-Chemical, -Solvent flooding processes.
This course will concentrate on the principles of SCAL data for heavy oil reservoir under thermal recovery processes. It will explain the impact that SCAL data would have on the estimation of the oil reserves, and the management of these reserves. This course will explain how SCAL data would be altered as a function of reservoirs wettability change under thermal recovery processes. The course also presents the idea of reservoir saturation history and the associated hysteresis with steam and hot water injection, especially those happening in the steam chambers of a SAGD process. Further, this course shows the implementation of wettability alteration in a thermal recovery process via temperature, composition dependent interpolation of different sets of relative permeability curves.

Shawket Ghedan is currently a Reservoir Simulation Advisor with CMG. He has more than 22 years of both academic and industrial experience in the area of reservoir management and modeling. Ghedan is supervising and modeling various applications of thermal recovery processes for heavy oil reservoirs as well as modeling oil and gas production from conventional and unconventional reservoirs. Previously, he held associate professor positions with the Petroleum Institute of Abu Dhabi and University of Baghdad. He also held senior reservoir simulation positions with Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. and Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company. Furthermore, he was senior instructor and consultant with NExT-Schlumberger.
Ghedan is currently interested in the area of SCAL data for heavy oil reservoirs, thermal recovery processes in carbonate naturally fractured reservoirs, as well as chemical flooding. He has experience in reservoir characterization, and modeling for waterflooding, and hydrocarbon gas and CO₂-compositional flooding, applied especially for carbonate reservoirs.
Ghedan has authored more than 40 technical papers, and has taught many reservoir engineering and reservoir modeling courses world-wide. He holds a BS degree in Petroleum Engineering from University of Baghdad, and ME and PhD degrees in Reservoir Engineering from Colorado School of Mines. Shawket is currently involved in a number of SPE international activities. He was SPE Distinguished Lecturer for 2005-2006. He was awarded the 2009 MENA Regional Reservoir Description and Dynamics Technical Award, 2010 SPE Outstanding Technical Editor Award, and 2011 MENA Regional Distinguished Petroleum Engineering Faculty Award.
