Course Description

This course is a combination of the following popular one-day courses offered by SPE since 2004:

  • Practical Aspects of CO2 Flooding EOR
  • Geological Sequestration of CO2

Almost 400 SPE members and others from around the world who have attended these one-day courses have provided valuable feedback for improvement. In preparing the new course, the instructors considered this feedback and allocated more time and detail to topics of most interest cited by the attendees.

This integrated course is based on the SPE Monograph Volume 22, Practical Aspects of CO2 Flooding, published in 2002, and is an outgrowth of the University of Texas Permian Basin / SPE CO2 Conferences and short-courses. The co-authors of the monograph presented a review of the monograph at the December 2002 conference. The authors’ presentations and the monograph were very well received by the conference attendees, and it is the instructor’s opinion that this course and the monograph should also be very well received by the SPE members outside the Permian Basin area as well. The instructors intend to present this course in conjunction with the SPE seminars and conferences, around the world, wherever there is an interest in improving oil recovery from oilfields, by CO2-flooding or by hydrocarbon gas flooding, and in CO2 geosequestration / carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), a topic of growing interest to the SPE members around the world.

In teaching this course, the instructors plan to spend most of the time discussing the practical aspects of CO2 flooding, and keep discussions of the theoretical topics only to what is essential.


  • Discuss economics of CO2 flooding (vis-à-vis water flooding)
  • Give the course attendees some practical and useful problems to work on
  • Discuss CO2 geosequestration / CCUS
  • Provide each course attendee a workbook containing copies of the instructors’ PowerPoint presentations, and solutions to the class problems

This integrated two-day course is ideal for presentation in conjunction with the SPE seminars and conferences in the United States, Canada, Latin America, the North Sea, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Australia, and in other regions, around the world, where there is tremendous interest in both topics, CO2 flooding EOR and CO2 geosequestration / CCUS.

Special Requirements

Attendees must bring laptops to class. The CO2 Prophet model and the Scoping program (an Excel program) will be provided and discussed in the class. The CO2 Prophet model can be run on Windows 7 (Professional) laptops by first installing Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode programs, that can be downloaded at no cost from

All cancellations must be received no later than 14 days prior to the course start date. Cancellations made after the 14 day window will not be refunded. Refunds will not be given due to no show situations.

Charles E. (Chuck) Fox is the founder and president of Windy Cove Energy, LLC, which invests in oil and gas projects. Previously, he was the vice president of operations and engineering for Kinder Morgan CO2 Company, where in addition to managing operations of the McElmo Dome CO2 source field and 1,000 miles of CO2 pipelines, he was responsible for the company’s oil and gas CO2 EOR operations, which included the 5 billion barrel original-oil-in-place (OOIP) Yates field, the 3 billion barrel OOIP SACROC field, and the Snyder Gasoline Plant.

Fox is a co-instructor of two popular courses taught under the auspicious of SPE, Practical Aspects of CO2 Flooding EOR and Geological Sequestration of CO2. He is one of the co-authors of the SPE Monograph Volume 22, Practical Aspects of CO2 Flooding, published in 2002, on which the Practical Aspects of CO2 Flooding EOR course is based. He was an instructor for several short-courses held at the annual CO2 conferences in Midland, Texas, which were sponsored by the University of Texas of the Permian Basin and SPE. He was a SPE Distinguished Lecturer, during 2012–2013, and in this role he lectured, at the SPE chapters around the world, on the topic of Carbon Capture and Storage SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) Analysis: Will We Implement the CCS Solution?

He was chairman of the program committee of the SPE/DOE Fourteenth Symposium on Improved Oil Recovery, held in Tulsa, Oklahoma, during April 2004. He holds an MS in petroleum engineering from Stanford University, and a BS in mechanical engineering from Rice University. He is a registered professional engineer (P.E.) in Texas and New Mexico, and a long-standing member of SPE.

S. M. (Sam) Avasthi, PE, PhD, is chairman and CEO, and director of engineering and EOR/IOR, at Avasthi & Associates, Inc., a worldwide energy consulting company, headquartered in Houston, Texas. In addition to providing strategic direction and leadership to the company that he founded in 1990, and that now provides full-service integrated consulting services to the worldwide oil and gas industry for onshore and offshore, conventional and unconventional/shale, oil, gas, gas-condensate/volatile oil, and heavy (and extra heavy) oil field evaluation, development and optimization (to maximize oil and gas recovery and project profitability), he is active in consulting and training in his areas of technical expertise. 

Avasthi is an engineering alumnus of the Indian School of Mines, Imperial College London, and Texas A&M University (where he earned a PhD in petroleum engineering). He was a research fellow in chemical engineering at Rice University, and worked for several years in senior-level petroleum engineering and consulting positions with major global integrated oil and gas producing and consulting companies before founding Avasthi & Associates, Inc. in 1990.

Avasthi is a registered professional engineer (PE) in Texas, a Legion of Honor member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), and a technical editor of the SPE Reservoir Evaluation & Engineering JournalSPE Production & Operations Journal, and the Journal of Canadian Petroleum Technology. He is a co-instructor of several popular courses taught under the auspices of SPE, including, Practical Aspects of CO₂ Flooding EOR, Geological Sequestration of CO₂, Practical Aspects of Thermal EOR, Practical Reservoir Surveillance and Management Techniques for EOR/IOR Projects, Optimizing Gas Fields using Integrated Asset Modeling (IAM), and Optimizing Shale Plays, and Practical Techniques for Screening Deepwater Offshore Oil & Gas Exploration Prospects.

J. M. (Jay) Avasthi, PhD, is president and COO, and director of geoservices (geomechanics, geosciences and CO₂ geosequestration) and unconventional/shale resources development and optimization at Avasthi & Associates, Inc., a worldwide energy consulting company headquartered in Houston, Texas. In addition to managing the worldwide consulting and training operations of the company, which he joined in 2003, he is active in consulting and training in his areas of technical expertise.

Avasthi has extensive worldwide oil & gas industry experience, including several years with Chevron Corporation in geomechanics, well stimulation/fracturing, rock properties, wellbore stability, and sand production prediction research, engineering and supervision. His expertise includes acquisition, calibration and use of the in situ stress data for oil & gas well construction and production, and for waterflood improved oil recovery (IOR) and CO2 flood enhanced oil recovery (EOR) project optimization; and solving fracturing stimulation, waste disposal through injection, wellbore stability, wellbore mechanics, and sand production prediction problems. He has authored/co-authored numerous technical publications on geomechanics, fracturing and related topics, including a US patent. He has taught several short course and conducted hands on training workshop in his areas of technical expertise, around the world. He is a co-instructor of three popular SPE training courses: ‘Practical Aspects of CO2 Flooding EOR’, ‘Geological Sequestration of CO2’, and ‘Optimizing Gas Fields using Integrated Asset Modeling (IAM), and Introduction to Optimizing Shale Gas and Tight Oil Fields’. 

Avasthi is an engineering and geosciences alumnus of the Indian School of Mines, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (where he earned a PhD in mining engineering, with specialization in Rock Mechanics). He worked in senior-level research, engineering and supervisory positions at Chevron Corporation for 24 years, before joining Avasthi & Associates, Inc. He is a long-standing member of SPE, a Technical Editor of the ‘SPE Reservoir Evaluation & Engineering Journal’, and has served as the SPE Los Angeles Basin Section Director and Program Chairman.
