The Sustainability Imperative: Making the Case and Driving Change (2-day version)

Course Description

The objective of this course is to provide participants with tools, techniques and knowledge for immediate use to help operators maintain project value through sustainability.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Better manage sustainability risks

On day one of this two-day interactive and engaging course, participants will receive an overview of key sustainability trends, challenges applying those concepts to a case study providing:

  • Guidance on addressing sustainability early in a project’s lifecycle, with special attention on how to articulate the sustainability business case, apply organizational change management techniques, optimize sustainability through operations and increase the likelihood of a project’s success.
  • Exploration of effective community engagement practices, including discussion of how to manage sustainability in different cultures and work with communities to manage the local economic aspects associated with oil and gas development.

On day two, participants will apply what they have learned via two half-day intensive case study discussions focused on 1) effective community engagement practices, and 2) application of learnings to the home front.

Johana Dunlop worked with Schlumberger for nearly 25 years and is deeply interested in the relationship between the oil and gas industry and society. Her education background draws on business, risk management and the liberal arts with an AIRM from the Institute of Risk Management in the UK, an MS in management from Boston University and a BA with honors in French and classics from Trinity College in Dublin.

After a career in risk management in the oil and gas industry, 1997 was a turning point in which she took a sabbatical to volunteer in post-Soviet Armenia with a grassroots Franco-Armenian aid agency called Solidarité Protestante France-Armenie. Her return to Schlumberger, where she had previously been a risk manager for the seismic and wireline businesses, took her formally into a field in which she had long had an informal interest – the impact of business on society. For six years, starting in 1998, she lived in New York and held management responsibilities for the first global community outreach program – Schlumberger Excellence in Educational Development (SEED) - leading implementation, development and promotion, internal and external communications, development of peer relationships, and incubation support of other outreach activities.

In 2004 she returned to Paris to take on a double role. One of her roles was transforming the Schlumberger Foundation into a strategic philanthropic vehicle. This work resulted in a portfolio of programs out of which Faculty for the Future became the flagship program, funding and supporting female scientists from developing countries. Her second role was to materialize the company’s societal profile. This resulted in a global citizenship framework focused on the company’s sustainability solutions, its social and environmental footprint as well as its community outreach. For over 20 years she was the internal thought leader on these topics, supporting the company as it increasingly integrated sustainability factors into its core strategy, policies and practices.

In 2017 Johana joined the board of SPE as technical director, HSE and sustainability. She previously chaired the Sustainable Development Technical Section and spearheaded the sustainability strategy development exercise that led to SPE focusing on capacity and competency building for its 160,000 members around the world. Johana has also been an active contributor and supporter of IPIECA for many years.

R.L. (Roland) Moreau has served as the current Health, Safety, Security, Environment & Social Responsibility (HSSE-SR) Technical Director for the Society of Petroleum Engineers International (SPE) Board of Directors since 2011. He recently retired with 34 years of services from ExxonMobil, where he held the position of Safety, Security, Health and Environment (SSH&E) Manager for ExxonMobil’s Upstream Research, Gas & Power Marketing, and Upstream Ventures business units. Roland received his BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1975, followed by an MBA in Finance from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1984. He began his career with Exxon Company, U.S.A. as a Project Engineer at the Bayway Refinery in New Jersey in 1981. Since that time, he has held various technical, supervisory and managerial assignments for Exxon, and then ExxonMobil, in the Upstream production, development, and research organizations. Prior to ExxonMobil, Roland also worked for five years in the naval nuclear industry.

He remains active on various SPE initiatives, and most recently served as Program Chair for the SPE International HSSE conference in Long Beach, California, in March 2014.

Linda Y. Brewer is a Partner in ERM’s Sustainability Strategy and Implementation practice based in Denver, Colorado, USA. She has over 25 years of experience in risk, strategy, leadership, operations, sustainability, climate adaptation and HSE performance and innovation in oil & gas, mining, chemicals, power and financial services. Linda has worked to optimize performance in across organizational verticals – from the ground floor to the executive suite. Through her background in management consulting and reengineering, she has refined proven management theories and demonstrated the significant efficiencies and bottom-line financial benefits of sustainability.

Linda has been a guest speaker at Harvard Business School, the Sloan Business School at MIT, Colorado School of Mines and the University of Michigan. She has written manuals on Rapid Change Implementation and Business Reengineering: Methods and Guidelines.

She is a contributor to Arctic development research science, a proud member of SPE and has written and presented both at SPE International Conferences and Offshore Technology Conferences on papers such as Deepwater Gulf of Mexico Development in a Post-Macondo World, An Emerging Strategic Imperative in Oil & Gas: The Social License to Operate and Non-Technical Risk Leadership – Integration and Execution. Her degree in Biological Anthropology is from Harvard University.

Alison Taylor leads BSR’s energy and extractives practice. She focuses on approaches to sustainability through risk management, strategy, stakeholder engagement, transparency, governance, and organizational change.

Previously, Alison was a senior managing director at Control Risks, where she helped companies operate with integrity, particularly in high-risk environments. She has also worked at Transparency International, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and IHS Global Insight. She has experience in strategic intelligence, market entry assistance, risk consulting, due diligence, internal investigations, enterprise risk management, and ethics and compliance. She speaks and writes regularly on risk and organizational culture. She is a board member of the anticorruption organization “Not in My Country” and serves on the SPE Sustainability Committee.

Alison holds an M.A. in International Relations from the University of Chicago, an M.A. in Organizational Psychology from Columbia University, and a B.A. in Modern History from Balliol College, Oxford University.
