Course Description

This course is intended for experienced engineers and technicians required to write internal technical reports or technical papers. It will appeal to those looking to refine their technical writing skills and streamline the writing process. Learners are asked to bring writing projects to the workshop to use as the basis for practice sessions.

  • Assessing the goal or objective of the document and its intended audience
  • Outlining the document and planning resources
  • Researching and referencing
  • Stages of drafting, writing, editing, usability and visuals
  • Supporting writing tools and style guides
  • Crafting introductions, conclusions, recommendations
  • Finalizing a technical document

Upon completion of this course, learners should understand

  • How to select a technical document type that aligns to a defined purpose and the intended audience
  • Strategies to plan, outline, resource, research and reference technical documents to make for a usable and searchable document
  • The stages of writing and editing and the supporting writing tools that streamline the writing process
  • The significance of an introduction or executive summary, conclusion or recommendations to compel the audience and bookend the technical document

Instructor

Camille Jensen is the Founder of Scribe Solutions Inc. in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She has been immersed in the energy industry for over 15 years. Renowned for driving projects to completion, she has facilitated several industry initiatives, two most notably--IRP 3: In Situ Heavy Oil Operations and IRP 24: Fracture Stimulation. Her repertoire covers a spectrum of technical documents including a well integrity standard, completions manuals, safe operating practices, JSAs, SPE papers, technical articles. In her consulting practice she offers services in technical writing, collaborative writing for multi-authored works, content direction for B2B energy services, and instructional design. 

Jensen has a significant background in the field of curriculum and instructional design. For the first 10 years of her career, she worked and consulted for post-secondary institutions building online programs and courses. She advised on the development of a learning model for a major Energy Producer’s Corporate University. Recently she collaborated with another Energy Producer on a Competency Assurance Program. Never one to be pigeonholed, Jensen is providing curriculum consultation for a global, Calgary-based food service corporation.

She also holds an MA (Communications and Technologies), BA (Communications), Dip (Multimedia) and is always plotting ways to add to her academic alphabet.
