Course Description

This course covers the key concepts applied by petroleum engineers to design, monitor, and evaluate wells completed in shale and tight reservoirs. The course is intended for individuals working in the oil and gas industry who are not trained or experienced as petroleum engineers but who guide, support, or collaborate with these engineers in the technical evaluation or design of shale wells. A special emphasis is placed on the reservoir, production, and completion engineering terminology and evaluation techniques that relate to shale and tight reservoirs but are rarely included in the development of conventional oil and gas reservoirs.

Why Attend

Shale courses have been developed in recent years for the petroleum engineers whereas this particular course is intended for the other technical and supervisory members of the shale evaluation teams so they are better prepared to support and/or guide the engineers. The engineering analysis of oil & gas plays includes integrating technical data from a variety of different sources. The preparation and transfer of information from these sources to the engineers improves as the people working with the engineers gain an appreciation and understanding of what data is needed by the engineers and how it will be used.

Special Requirements

Participants should bring a calculator or other device to solve simple math problems.

Steve Hennings, M.S., P.E. is the Principal Consultant for Source Rock Engineering, in Littleton, Colorado. He is a registered professional engineer and holds a Bachelors degree in Petroleum Engineering and a Masters degree in Finance. Steve has been employed in the oil & gas industry for 30 years and has handled a wide variety of reservoir, production and completion engineering assignments while working in over two dozen different basins. These assignments ranged from well completion foreman to computer simulation specialist to engineering and geoscience manager for the largest oil field in the continental United States. Steve also worked in a petroleum research center and served as the regional technical coordinator for a major oil & gas company.  His focus for the past ten years has been exclusively on developing unconventional reservoirs and occasionally he conducts courses for the SPE to share lessons learned from his ongoing participation in unconventional reservoir development. These courses are listed in the SPE Training Catalogue and include: "Shale and Tight Reservoir Technical Analysis", and "Shale Hydraulic Fracturing Design and Analysis".

Hennings is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists, and the Society of Mining Engineers. In 2008 he shared the prestigious annual Stefanko Award for his technical contributions.
