The second SPE Thailand Young Professional (YP) Technical Presentation Contest was held at the Chevron Thailand office in August 2009. The event was opened by an address from Khun Tara Tiradnakorn, president, Chevron Thailand E&P, who highlighted the importance of involvement in SPE and the platform that SPE provides for YPs to interact with engineers and geoscientists from the technical community.
Thirteen abstracts were selected for the contest, covering a wide range of technical disciplines from drilling and completions to geosciences and reservoir engineering. The presenters faced questions from the judging committee, which was composed of local industry experts Brian Burke, Chevron; Saifon Daungkaew, Schlumberger; Jittima Mantajit, Thailand Department of Minerals and Fuels; and Yingyos Khemayodhin, Chulaongkorn University. The presentation contest was well attended, with more than 140 participants.
The best three presenters were awarded SPE recognition plaques and cash prizes. The winner of the presentation contest, Chakorn Kanjanavasoontara, Schlumberger, also was invited by the Thailand Section to give his presentation at the monthly SPE meeting.
The YP group for SPE Thailand was started in 2008 and has continued to grow and expand in 2009. The group has nearly 200 members and is conducting a number of social and technical events to provide networking and early career-development and professional-growth opportunities.
