Message from Africa Regional Director

December 2018

Wumi Iledare
SPE Regional Director Africa Region
I am delighted to provide you with this last regional update in 2018. I sincerely wish you happy holidays! For some of you traveling this holiday, I wish you safe travels to your respective locations.

2018 has been a challenging year with the sudden demise of our amiable Engr. Adeyemi Akinlawon, SPE Africa Regional Director 2015-18; however, it has also been a productive year. We established two new student chapters in Africa: Baze University, Abuja and Bayero University, Kano. We also observed positive growth in membership and our professional member retention rate. Many sections hosted very successful and productive events during the year.

At 2018 ATCE in Dallas, several sections were recognised for outstanding volunteerism and productive activities. I sincerely congratulate these sections for their recognitions and awards. We look forward to the recognition of many more outstanding sections in the new year. Certainly, 2019 promises to be a great year for us in Africa. We have started the process to establish two new sections: a Malabo section in Equatorial Guinea and a Chad section in Chad Republic. I will provide an update of the progress of this initiative. We have also proposed hosting the first Africa Regional Officers Meeting in Lagos, Nigeria at the 2019 SPE NAICE in August. The SPE Nigeria Council has accepted our proposal.

Finally, our primary goal for 2019 is to expedite excellent professional networking amongst sections and chapters in the Africa region. I am hopeful every section will key in to the SPE core value of enhancing member technical competence.

Let me again wish you a happy Christmas holiday and a prosperous new year!
